Why this business was started

I began this business as an off-shoot from a small home decor business; in 2011, I started a 'side hustle' to give myself a project to do outside of my career as a teacher. I had an antique booth and then started traveling to vintage shows on the weekends. I added women's clothing in 2013 and had so much success that I started the website to connect with my customers between shows. After the birth of our first baby in 2014, this shop was still very much a hobby but I added baby apparel and gifts; this was such a hit that I transitioned exclusively to baby in 2017. I was able to quit my part-time work and have worked on the business roughly 20-30 hours a week since 2018. I now have 3 part-time staff members who help fulfill orders and organize/list inventory.

The reason of selling this business

This business has become something larger and more successful than I ever imagined. I experienced rapid growth in 2020, as my revenue grew 82% from 2019. Now, in 2021, we are projecting 43% growth from 2020. I run this business out of my home, my inventory has more than tripled in the past few years, and my two young children are growing - I feel like I am missing out on being present with them to run the business and since my work is at home it is hard to separate business from personal time since I am surrounded by work. I'm excited to step back from work, enjoy my family, reclaim my house (we don't have an office so our dining room is my work space, and all of our closets have inventory!), and watch someone else take over to continue growing my 'first' baby. I don't have a business background, and this this business was more of a hobby for the first 5 years; someone with business experience can make this business much more efficient!

What's involved in running this business

Customer service tasks like responding to emails and direct messages on Instagram, ordering from high quality and sustainability focused children's clothing brands, promoting new arrivals, launching collections with email and text campaigns, organizing and updating the website, and fulfilling orders are the top day to day activities. I hired an outside firm to handle Google Ads management for about 10 months this year but I have since ended that since I am managing on my own now.

    How to grow this business

    Social media presence is underutilized; regular posting, adding videos, offering live sales, adding a VIP group, social media advertising, more frequent and targeted campaign email marketing (automated flows are already set up for both text and email), offering collaborations with influencers, and adding an app are top of the list for areas to grow. I also would add a warehouse space, increase inventory, increase marketing dollars, and add more staff.
