Why this business was started

At the time, there weren't many good online IT certifications schools that offered a large variety of courses. There is still a huge opportunity for online certifications schools. The playing field has changed over the years. When I started teaching the focus was more on networking and these days the focus seems to be more on Security and Software Development. We have a wide range of courses including these two areas.

The reason of selling this business

I decided to sell the business and move onto another opportunity that's outside of IT. My wife and I can both work together and travel while building the new business.

What's involved in running this business

Here are the keys to running this business successfully:

  1. Advertise as much as possible
  2. Owner should take an active role in all aspects of the business.
  3. Try to get as many classes as possible with multiple attendees to drive up profit margins.
  4. Try focus on Corporate and Government sales but individual student sales are good too and will help with referrals.
  5. Don't forget about the consulting side of the business. Students will often ask for help at their work place with IT issues.
  6. Recruit more top-notch instructors. We hire them as 1099's usually.
  7. Offer bonuses to instructors for positive student survey results. Retain top talent.

When a student purchases a course, several things must happen: 1. Leave the order as unfulfilled until the student passes the course. 2. Order the courseware through our vendor. It includes student material, instructor material and labs 3. Send the e-delivered materials to the student and instructor. Send the labs to the instructor only. 4. Notify the nearest instructor of the dates and times of the course, along with the classroom location or set up a webex if remote. 5. After the student takes the course, mark it as fulfilled. 6. Send the Completion Certificate and Survey to the student. 7. Send the preformatted referral email to the student. 8. Pay the instructor and issue a bonus for a good survey. Our instructors get paid $20-$25/hr to teach in class and $17-$19/hr for remote.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

    I would strongly suggest continuing to advertise the school and consulting business via the already established PPC campaigns, Direct Marketing, News Letters and through the established SEO efforts. I have spent a lot of time researching and building the various marketing campaigns. As the new owner, I would suggest focusing more on Social Networks, as I have not focused intently on that area yet and that can be a huge new, untapped revenue stream. We have classrooms around the US and instructors in most major metro areas that would stay on board with transfer of ownership. We also have many vendor relationships for course content.

    Currently we teach classes via 3 channels:

    1. In-class training around the US
    2. Remote "Live Online" training over WebEx
    3. Self Study courses

    The more profitable channels are the Live Online and Self Study

    Profit margins: 60% Profit on Remote Training 80% Profit on Self Study 33% Profit on In Class Instruction for 1 student. ( In-Class is much more profitable with multiple students than a single student).

    Skills to have

    The new owner should have a background in IT and/or teaching. You should also have a background in business and marketing. Instructor recruitment is very important and you should have excellent interview skills to recruit high caliber instructors.
