Why this business was started

Obviously, the main reason you would want to start an online business is for the freedom it allows and the potential for making a lot of money. But the reasons for acting upon this particular idea were as follows..

As someone who was working in a tech-related job, I suffered badly from strain and headaches. Long days at the screen, followed by evenings looking at my phone & T.V were causing discomfort. It was very much a "voila" moment when myself and my girlfriend read an article about blue light and decided to buy a cheap pair from Amazon. They helped a lot, but were low quality, aesthetically displeasing, and non-branded. From some basic research we could see there was a gap for a more premium, more attractive brand of blue light glasses.

As we prototyped our product and gave samples to friends and family, the feedback was excellent. They greatly helped with the eye-strain issues of the test subjects and we believe we had a duty to bring this product to the vast number of workers who spend countless hours in front of screens and suffer the consequences.

We felt that with our respective skills we could bring something to the market that people would really want to wear. We felt we could make blue light glasses "cool".

The reason of selling this business

Simply put, I have just turned 31 as has my girlfriend and co-owner. We have 2 kids, one a newborn, and would like to take time to rest. She is spending quite a lot of her time with the newborn and finding it difficult to commit her time to the company. We think it would be a good time to sell up and reassess what we want to do with our 30s.

    How to grow this business

    Growth has been quite fast since founding the store. But they are big opportunities internationally. This is a quality brand and product, that we feel can be a big success worldwide.

    If the buyer can replicate the brand's success in Ireland in a bigger market, there would be huge growth.

    Also, we have an offline presence with luxury retailers, including the Irish arm of Selfridges. Growing these B2B opportunities is an opportunity that not many other Shopify acquisitions would give you.

    Skills to have

    • The basics optical products can be learned quickly (how to read prescriptions etc.)
    • Digital marketing and branding are probably the keys to success here
    • Experience with growing brands internationally via a direct-to-consumer model
    • Experience selling to retailers would also be a plus
