Business Story

Why this business was started

It all started with my French bulldog, Milo. I was looking for a harness for him, but couldn't find any that fit him well or had appealing designs. There seemed to be a gap in the market for apparel that fits compact breeds well, so I chose to create my own, and found a manufacturer to help me make it a reality. I expanded on that and started offering dog parent apparel and accessories through a print on demand supplier as well.

The reason of selling this business

I moved to Austin to pursue new career opportunities and need to focus 100% on that. If I had more time and resources I would love to keep growing the company. It's been a labor of love and has a lot of potential.

What's involved in running this business

Day to day operations include fulfilling orders, reviewing ad campaigns, and responding to customer e-mails or DMs on social media.

Orders could be fulfilled at a warehouse or through Amazon FBA, ad campaigns could be outsourced, and social media/customer relations could be done through a virtual assistant for a completely hands off approach.

Social media posts can be done in about 15 minutes once a week using free software.

Traffic and Performance

  • Avg. sessions /month3,839Verified
  • Avg. profit /month
  • Inventory value
  • Profit Margin33%
  • Avg. sales /month120
Other details about profit: Average monthly revenue for the last six months is over $4,200. The above figures exclude revenue from sales channels like Etsy and Faire, which generates a significant amount in organic sales. I recently established relationships with a couple of complimentary US dog product suppliers and allowed Dropshipping of my products by a couple of select stores, which has increased revenue and broadened the overall product offering. As a result, April 2020 revenue was over $6,500 and profit was over $2,500. The conversion rate has been a steady 2% and the return on ad spend for the recent campaigns has been 2-7x, so there's the potential to scale this well beyond what it currently is. I also haven't done much with e-mail marketing, so there's a lot of potential there.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

The main focus and revenue generator is the in house brand inventory (Oui Oui Frenchie harnesses, leashes, etc.) The second is the print on demand dog parent product line (phone cases, tote bags, etc). And the third is the dropship (US suppliers only) relationships to broaden the overall product line (this includes items in the new arrivals section - ID tags, matching dog + people clothes, etc). You can simplify things and just focus on the in house Oui Oui Frenchie brand or expand the POD and dropship components.

The customers are very loyal and enthusiastic, so I would continue to release new designs and add other offerings, such as hoodies, rain coats, etc. to give them more options. You could also expand the dog parent offerings and push those out to other sales channels.

Customer service has always been the #1 priority. As a result, I have hundreds of reviews with a 99% 5-star rating, and the repeat customer rate has been very high and the return/exchange rate is extremely low.

A key focus should be continuing to grow Instagram (currently at 12k followers), as a lot of traffic and revenue is generated organically. It's the place to be for dog parents, and a great way to find and interact with potential customers.

Currently the brand is on page 1 for a few keywords, which has resulted in nice organic traffic. That could be improved to reduce monthly ad spend.

I hired a professional ads management and e-mail marketing team to help refine everything, so the e-mail campaigns (post-purchase, abandoned cart, etc.) are all well designed and on auto pilot. All campaigns are well designed and generating positive returns. They currently include very search intent focused Google traffic ads and retargeting on Facebook/Instagram. There's a lot of great pixel data and examples of campaigns that have worked well in the past, so it's a matter of how quickly the new owner would like to grow.

The brand already has established channels on Etsy and Faire, which generate great income with no ad spend. I've also been in talks with Nordstrom and Chewy, which could be a game changer.

A lot more could be done, as far as developing more wholesale relationships, hosting events, increasing ad spend and continually optimizing and scaling campaigns, advertising on Etsy, Pinterest, or dog related publications, developing new product offerings and releasing new designs 3-4 times a year, establishing more "pupfluencer" relationships, creating a Youtube channel, collaborating with other brands, attending pet expos, etc.

    Skills to have

A creative mindset to develop new designs and products, and a basic understanding of ads and e-mail marketing (unless you choose to hire a management company for this).
