Business Story

Why this business was started

** please note our shopify sales shown above are just a portion of the business, we also have dropship income, wholesale income, etc. **

I saw a major gap in the market for all natural watches and accessories. Through developing a few highly unique products, I have been able to scale the company and then introduce white label items. Now, we also make some income from items dropshipped directly from Asia to our customers.

The reason of selling this business

Making some big life changes and looking to cash out to meet other capital needs. The last 16 months I have gone through some intense personal and family issues which I attribute to the business slow down. Can discuss this in detail over the phone.

What's involved in running this business

Must be familiar with e-commerce, ordering from international suppliers, logistics, and digital marketing.

This business was founded: over 6 years ago
Time to run this business: approximately 10 hours per week

General description

For serious entrepreneurs who want to buy a 5+ year old, profitable since day 1 watch brand. This is not a pure dropship or turnkey opportunity. We do have some dropship items now though. The true e-commerce visionary knows that branding is the key to future success. This is for those who understand you need to stand out in a world dominated by Amazon and a million and one me-too businesses all selling the exact same products. We do have a few drop ship items, but our core products are produced with our trusted suppliers. Great offering for buyer or business looking to add a mid price design brand to their portfolio. Direct to consumer profit margins are around 80% - combined with wholesale and B2B we operate with around a 70-75% profit margin.

We offer uniquely crafted timepieces and accessories from natural materials - wood, marble, flowers, moss, cork, etc. We are one of the only watch brands to have ongoing or previous partnerships with major museums and brands - from Mercedes-Benz, to MoMA Design Store, to Guggenheim, to Maker's Mark. Our core designs are truly differentiated from the market and resonate with customers seeking innovation, affordable price, and a conversational timepiece.

The market does not need another MVMT style watch company - that market and aesthetic is saturated. You need brand reputation and some unique product offerings to secure longer term partnerships and B2B opportunities - which this brand is ripe for.

This business is perfectly positioned for the right creative & commercial minds to turn it into a hugely successful venture. We’ve had some big wins in Asian markets but have been limited on bandwidth to pursue that area. Ultimately, major buyers and wholesalers have interest in the brand so this is ripe for opportunity if someone is familiar with scaling or entering international markets (Japan and Dubai are most promising for us right now)

I've been overly cautious over the years when it came to digital advertising and 6 years in after some personal life changes I am ready for a life change to pursue other opportunities. This business is ideal for someone who knows how to properly run ads, work with a 3PL or ship from home, and most ideally has someone available to engage with opportunities (re-engaging major wholesale accounts, co-branded product, etc.)

This is a a home run for anyone with experience in digital marketing and PPC. With 45,000 emails, social channels built out, and a sizable list of wholesale accounts (many lapsed, just need to be re-engaged) - you could let this run as is or introduce some new products and ads and really blow the brand up. We've done 1.7 mil over 6 years with very little digital ad spend and 700k in sellers discretionary earnings. Many of our products are custom designs, we would pass you our supplier. We've secure a foothold within a niche due to a specific design aesthetic and social mission. Every item sold contributes to a different non-profit partner. We have reliable suppliers who has been flexible and accommodating over the years. Initial inventory would be included but value amount would depend on sale date.

Why should someone buy this store?

Perfect for someone who wants to either buy the brand and audience to sell other products, who is skilled and experienced with PPC and running ads or someone looking to add a profitable brand to their portfolio.

The growth potential is very high for anyone with expertise in digital marketing and growth hacking. Well suited for firms who have the infrastructure set up managing multiple existing stores or individuals looking for a built in audience. We've had major coverage in almost every major and smaller outlets. You would be purchasing a brand, a large email list, unique and innovative designs. You would make a 1.7x return on investment via sales of existing inventory alone, opening the door for new product introductions to our massive email list. We are in a booming market space and you would be enabled with a variety of creative brand assets.

How can the future owner improve the business?

If you can funnel more traffic, conversions are guaranteed. The product and brand story are very unique. You could also simply let it ride as is and make a significant return.

What work have you put into the store?

Full custom product development and manufacturer sourcing for the products, some customization via apps, full brand development, custom creative, established non-profit partnerships, photography, blog content, etc.

We began with Shopify about 3 years ago. Used another platform prior.

Domain authority is extremely high, and we rank #1 for search term "Analog Watch" so any buyer would do well in adding traditional looking watches dropshipped direct from Asia. This hands off approach yields you no inventory upfront costs and due to the organic traffic, you'll always have customers.

Other details about profit: Our e-commerce sales also come from other channels off shopify. 2019 profit (sellers discretionary earnings) was $70k including all sales channels. Online only sales was $45k. This is a significant drop from previous years due to my personal life forcing me to step back. With a 2.7 multiplier on the $45k online only sales, the value of this e-commerce portion of the business alone is $122k. Business is being undervalued and only valued at the e-commerce only sales numbers to ensure a quicker sale. The sales numbers for e-com only does not include b2b projects and wholesale. Shopify exchange will not let me list a higher average profit per month beyond the store data, but our profit is higher than listed as it includes my wholesale and B2B project off the platform. Everything has been well documented using Quickbooks and our taxes and accounting is up to date and accurate. 2017 I personally netted $115,000 cash after taxes, in 2018 $110,000 cash after taxes. I've only ever had 1 full time employee, and and have at times run the business on my own sometimes subbing work out to VAs. Last 10 months it's just been me working essentially 5-10 hours week which accounts for the big slowdown. Rest assured, with 5 years prior sales history this is a temporary drop. In addition, we've launched white labeled products - wood sunglasses for example, which had our logo on it but required no product development investment and allowed us to order at smaller minimums. The eyewear alone generated 40,000 in 2 years. The wood sunglasses are hidden on the site as I did not want to invest in inventory again in anticipation of the sale. Our sunglass provider has very low MOQ and we have 25 SKU already built out that just need to be turned on. I have well documented proof of performance, returns, etc. ready for serious buyers.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

I am selling due to a life transition, not due to a lack of success. Growth over the next 5 years would include new product roll outs, internal automation, and digital marketing.

    Skills to have

New owner would not need experience in design or fashion, but would want to be skilled in digital advertising (an area we never focused on and have spent very very little on)
