Business Story

Why this business was started

I'm a native Japanese speaker and understand the culture. I realized that the Aliexpress dropshipping model hadn't been applied to any Japanese language stores. Therefore, I've decided to give it a try. The store is a general store with the theme of providing products that will make one's life more fun and convenient (which is 100% true). Most of the winners were tried and tested products from English stores, and it was just a matter of testing whether the product and price-point would work for the Japanese market. It's a VERY unique store because NOBODY that I know of or have seen is running this style of store in Japan.

The reason of selling this business

After going through a redesign of the store in July, I became busy with a different project, and the amount of effort I have been putting into this store recently has become very low, as can be seen by the drop in sales from March-July compared to August-now. I'm still running Facebook ad campaigns, but campaigns haven't been scaled nor optimized. The store has done about $330,000 USD from it's opening in March, so there's certainly demand for the products I have put on it. I want to sell it now because I'm too focused on my other project, and don't want to keep paying the operating costs.

What's involved in running this business

Unless you have some form of traffic set up, you will have to drive traffic to this store through paid advertising, whether it be Facebook or Google or Native etc. You will need to hire VAs to fulfill your orders (they will also need to change the Japanese addresses to English characters to be able to input into Aliexpress - the VAs I'm currently using will happily keep working on this for you), have a customer support system for just emails (I can provide the pre-written responses and flow for different questions), and finding new dropshipping products to test, and creating (or ripping) product videos. If you already have a general store in English and have some winners, it'll be easy to transfer over those products and ads to this store.

Seller‘s Advice

How to grow this business

I will continue finding winning products for FB ads, and then scale. I will also expand my ads into other traffic sources. I will put a lot more effort into my email campaigns, which has a list of 5000+ subscribers. I will also put money into improving my SEO so that I get more organic search traffic - currently it gets some organic traffic from Google and Yahoo, but there's a LOT of untapped potential here. I will also delegate a lot more of the work to VAs.

Skills to have

It will certainly be helpful to know Japanese, but I don't think it's essential. I have friends that are running the same type of dropshipping general stores in languages they don't speak - they just found a cheap translator off of Fiverr or upwork to do all the translations. As writing product descriptions in Japanese can be time-consuming, I have my VA translate English product descriptions to Japanese for me. It's faster and a lot better quality if I were to write them all. Unless you have some idea about ways to drive traffic to this store besides paid ads, you should probably have some experience with Facebook ads (or some other paid traffic source). Email marketing knowledge would be HUGE I think, as there's 5000+ subscribers already.

Running this business for 9 months
I was born and raised in Japan, but have lived in the USA for all my adult life. I've been doing online marketing related work for the past 5 years, with the last 3 years working for myself. Up until March of this year, I had only been doing affiliate marketing related projects, but I thought that running a Japanese dropshipping store had a lot of potential, so I worked on this store while also running other affiliate campaigns as my primary income.
