Business Story

Why this business was started

I've always wanted to have my own business since I've been a retailer and ecommerce merchant for many years but for large companies. I'm especially fond of farmhouse home accessories and know vendors in this industry so when the pandemic hit, it gave me an great opportunity to start my own online business.

The reason of selling this business

I'm a one man show and its challenging to manage social media and running your own business. I'm also semi-retired and am not in a position to borrow money so everything from this business has been from my own savings. I've tried to obtain a partner but to no avail. as everyone in my community friends and family all work full time and don't have time to run a business in addition to their work.

What's involved in running this business

Daily: Each Sunday I write out my list of projects for the week by day. Monday, I look at the analytics and find what posts had the most engagements, click rate etc. decide on when and if I'll run an Instagram ad (usually it's when I receive new stock or for an important holiday) Weekly: Schedule my Instagram posts for the week (I post 5-6 per week) Check my website to see if any collections need to be updated based on holidays or new products. Packaging and shipping based on incoming orders Monthly: Write a new blog for my website Add new pins for Pinterest (I'm trying to do this weekly as I receive quite a bit of engagement in my pins and will be starting to advertise on this platform as opposed to FB/Instagram) Plan my ads for the month Set up or update any new collections Log in my receipts, monthly ledger Check imagery and copy for slow speed Quarterly: Update my inventory sheet Work on new vendor assortments, decide my buy and what collections to bring in Pre plan and add imagery and copy to the site so when products arrive, I can instantly make them active. Many products have run late due to the pandemic (most of my products are from China and India) SEO analysis, key word research Audit copy and imagery, pages, site speed Lifestyle photography (a portion of my photography I shoot myself) used for social media, blogs, emails and the website. As Needed: NRF webinars, Shopify podcast (always learning new things) Atlanta women's business networking zoom meeting I fulfill all my orders myself as I have a building on my property which houses my inventory. I add my own branded labels and cards in each package i ship as well as adding my signature checked ribbon. I have two main vendors of which one has 70% of my business. The vintage portion of my business is done by shopping at estate sales and antique fairs. When i run campaigns on Instagram, I list detailed demogrphics so i can hit the right customer: Age group 45-and up Locations: DMA Tennessee, DMA Boise Idaho, DMA Oklahoma, Florida, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth Texas, Charlotte North Carolina, Atlanta GA, Charleston South Carolina, Augusta GA, DMA Birmingham and Huntsville Alabama, Tulsa Oklahoma Interests: Farmhouse, Fixer Upper by Joanna Gaines, Country Cottage Rustic farmhouse, Ree Drummond of Pioneer Woman Income: top 25%-50% of US zip codes I'll market at least 3-4 weeks before a major holiday, so customer receives package in time.

This business was founded: almost 2 years ago
Time to run this business: approximately 35 hours per week

I have a good relationship with vendor Mudpie however just like everyone else, their shipping is not timely due to the pandemic. However, the product they sell is very popular. My other vendor, CTW ships on time but their assortment isn't as good as Mudpie. I have a supplier for my gift basket business, Floral Syndicate they are local and ship on time however I don't buy much from them. For my vintage products, I go to estate sales in my local area. They have a website where you can preview product and see when the next estate sale you're interested in is happening. There is another vintage warehouse sale that happens once a month up in the Sacramento area where you can buy wholesale.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

Add patio and garden products Add additional home décor (nonkitchen products ie: candle sticks, baskets, vases, picture frames) Add bar & accessories Add additional serving and entertaining pieces Add outdoor grill products Add pet products Open up another vendor Creative Coop Look into Drop Ship from current domestic vendor Expand the gift basket collection Add an admin to help with back end set up of products etc. Add a social media person to create posts and videos on all three social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Add gift cards Partake in community festivals to sell as a pop up (somewhat of a challenge with some ceramic products) Add other apps to automize many backend admin data entry work Design my own packaging Design my own line of branded linens or tableware or both

    Skills to have

I use an app for bundling products so I can get a higher AOV. I sell a portion of my business as welcome baskets to local realtors for their clients, so you need to be creative and understand what the new homeowner wants for his/her new home. Being super flexible (since I am a one man show) you need to be skilled at posting on social media, creating blogs, shooting your own lifestyle photography, and being super organized Understanding the vintage market as 15 to 20% of my total inventory comes from vintage shopping. You need to understand what customers like when it comes to vintage home products.
