Why this business was started

A 9-5 was never my idea of living. I started this brand after my studies and made my first money with it. I saw a kind of gap in the lighting niche coupled with upcoming trend and that's how i started my first business. I liked the fact that it was a semi high-ticked brand that could sell like a low ticket store. My first months i tried dropshipping from Europe to the customer but i quickly saw that i had to diversify and use a 3PL for better service. In februari 2021 i received my first stock and that's when i actually started selling and scaling. Throughout the months i learned Facebook and Google and saw that my biggest problems were the shortage of stock and capital. In August i did my first 100k month and on occasion i decided to put all my money into buying stock for the last months of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. It was a very big succes and we sold out at the end of December 2021 after ranking first on Google in Germany.

The reason of selling this business

After having my first succes with this lighting e-commerce business i got the chance to join in a new brand were me and my business partner saw a once in a life opportunity. We took it and it worked out very well until now. This resulted in me spending my full workweek working with the team for this new brand that we are scaling massively. It is with regret in my heart that I will sell this brand but it's better to hand it out to someone who has the time and effort to put in and scale this brand to the moon.

What's involved in running this business

Main role will be running ads and managing the team. Since we brought the people we worked with for this brand to our new brand i would suggest you just implement your own team or handle the work yourself. Our team existed out of 1 customer service agent and 1 content creator (freelancer) - then we had a 3PL in place and a very cooperating supplier. This would be more than enough for this size of a brand but if you want to scale i would suggest expanding the team, but that's up to you.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

    There are several ways to grow this lighting brand into a multi-million store :

    • Horizontal scaling : The majority of sales come from Germany and the Netherlands + Belgium. Of course these countries can still be scaled but there is also great potential in neighboring countries such as France or the Scandinavian countries.

    • Improving conversation rate : Until early 2022, we had always used the theme Debutify. This is a simple (free) theme that always did the job until the moment we thought of scaling horizontally (never happened) we needed a better theme that would also boost the conversion rate. To this day we have not advertised heavily nor put in the time to make the theme conversion optimized. Theme is bought on Shopify and worth 300USD (included in sale)

    • Expanding the product range : To date there are only 13 lights in the product line, of which only 8 have been sold. It is very easy to expand the range, test different products and scale these afterwards. Our method was to use a pre-order announcement to test the demand for a product (check if it's a winner) and then immediately buy in bulk with our customized packaging from our supplier (included in the price). At the end of 2021 when we did €220.000,00 in 2 months we decided to invest in a remote we could implement with all our lights to diversify the products from every other competitor. We bought a mold at our supplier (7k USD) and made inventory for this remote but never used it nor implemented it. This will be your ticket to diversification and innovating the product range.

    Improving marketing: In the lighting niche, it would be ideal to create more dynamic video content for the lamps (UGC). Advertising for the brand has so far mainly been on Google resulting in a lack of creativity. Advertising on Facebook was done, but always very simply with a photo or a carousel (also good ROAS) - Improving the marketing and trying multiple platforms would therefore immediately boost sales and make it a multimillion brand. Now that I am writing about it, I regret that I did not made more content and tried other platforms myself sooner, when I still had the time. I sincerely hope that the brand will end up with someone who will make it a great success.

    Skills to have

    Of course, you will need some kind of experience with Shopify and business in general but this goes without saying. A marketing skill is also necessary but this can also be outsourced - your choice. In general it's a easy business to step into but it requires knowledge and experience to scale to the next level.
