Why this business was started

After a lifetime of loving the lake and a strong understanding of branding, I wanted to create a brand that lived the characteristics of the lake lover. The business was born to build a community and offering that celebrated nature, namely water, for its beauty, adventure, and healing properties. I wanted to unite lake lovers, help them feel seen for the way they connected to nature, and offer an inspirational product that they felt expressed who they were and what they valued. What started as a handful of designs, including the pillar trademarked designs LAKE DAY and CHASE MOR SUNSETS, morphed into 40+ designs, (two more trademarks SO COLD and LONG LIVE LAKE LIFE), a lifestyle shop (closed during COVID/2022), a fair amount of Midwest press, and a connected following that loves feeling understood and inspired! I began experimenting with eco-friendly products, drop-shipping, small batch sourcing, etc., in addition to navigating wholesale relationships that demanded larger volumes and custom offerings.

This business has been the most profound self-development activity I’ve ever participated in. The way that my life looks now is a full representation of the doors and humans that [PRIVATE INFO] introduced me to and I am beyond grateful for this chapter and birthing this into existence. That said, I am, and always have been, someone who has multiple exciting and compelling projects in their periphery. It’s become clear in the last few years, right before the original closure moving into the COVID lockdowns, that this brand has exponential potential, but that that potential is best realized in the hands and direction of someone else. I realized that for every challenge or hurdle, I was the bottleneck. I have full faith in this business and want to see it soar — the potential for profitability, impact, and legacy is massive — but I just know that someone else is going to take it to those heights. With this IP, the brand potential feels like one big opportunity.

The downtrend that you see is very much a product of my own personal journey in conjunction with world events. Profit margin (cost of goods) is generally 40-60% depending on adherence to eco standards. My books will reflect the way that I categorized in order to redeem lowest "profitability" for tax purposes (single member LLC), so that bottom line profit margin is going to render as <10%

    How to grow this business

    While I truly feel the options are endless, I would focus on: - Developing a wholesale or licensing strategy that focused on working with shops and other businesses (likely hospitality / restaurant) to retain rights to the intellectual property in their region. - Collaborating with influential and inspirational graphic designers who have loyal followings to create additional designs or reimagine the existing IP that already has strong following Invest in marketing support — have experts in the industry play with the brand, paid ads, newsletter segmentation tactics, all the features available on social media, etc. - Launch brick and mortar experiences. The lifestyle shop I had beachside within view of daily sunsets was proof of concept, so expand this in key regions whether as permanent or pop-up (standalone or within thriving retail outlets). Ex. Lake Tahoe, Lake Travis, Lake Michigan beachside towns, Door County Wi, and other key tourism/summer heavy destinations that create a romantic / idyllic connection moment.

    Skills to have

    Ideally a strong background in retail, retail finance and marketing. A strong relationship for nature, or at least a reverence for it, will ensure your continued connection with the audience. You understand all facets of retail and business in addition to loving nature, but one or the other with a willingness to master the other will do. I very much began this with no knowledge of retail / apparel, which took a few years to ramp up and definitely contributed to many hiccups along my way. I was willing to learn, but not always able to find the support or resources to bring me up to speed in time for decision making. I always felt a season behind, which if someone was more proactive, they’d nail easily and would ultimately open up many doors!
