Business Story
Why this business was started
While working a summer position in the wardrobe department of Cirque du Soleil, several performers noticed the jewelry I was making as a hobby and inquired about purchasing their own. This was the initial spark that ignited the company. When I moved back to Southern California, I slowly started to sell more and more pieces. After picking up my first few stores, it was time to make it official.
The reason of selling this business
Business grew exponentially between 2007-2017. In 2017, I was met with my greatest challenge when my son was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age 4. I was fortunate to have my team at the time run the business as usual for the remainder of the year, finishing 2017 with our highest revenue yet. Treatments are still ongoing and without being able to invest the same amount of time and energy into growing the business as I once had, I scaled back on employees while considering next steps. The company continues to gain new accounts (even in recent weeks) and have retained accounts for many years. I am ready to move onto the next chapter of my life and pass this on to someone who can take it to it's full potential. The systems and clients are there and ready for someone to step in, seamlessly.

Seller‘s Advice
How to grow this business
A passionate individual could grow this business exponentially over the next 5 years. With more retail store buyers interested in online shopping, I would recommend focusing on the wholesale platforms we have already established- both our own wholesale Shopify site and the independent websites that cater to retail stores. We have opened more new accounts online in the past year than in person which not only makes reaching all parts of the country easier but also more affordable than trade shows and traveling, so your profit is higher. Included in the sale is our direct to consumer website which generates about 10% of revenue with room to grow. Social media is a great tool for sales and I would recommend utilizing these platforms to boost revenue and they have not yet been used to their full potential. Our direct to consumer Shopify store is already integrated with Facebook and items can be purchased directly from Instagram. We are already set up with Amazon FBA, which is weeks of work, if a buyer was interested in adding that sales avenue. Another great resource is our contact list (FabFitFun, TJMaxx, REVOLVE) and I would recommend making connections with the hundreds of accounts we have worked with over the years to reestablish relationships. An exciting benefit of this business is that an owner can cater the business to fit their lifestyle and needs. Flexibility and an intimate work environment are both currently in high demand and this company can be run out of a private studio or your own home.
Skills to have
The skills needed can vary depending on what or how much one wants to outsource, either to an employee or contractor. Depending on volume, the company can be run by a single person or by a small team. Assuming it is owner only run, the skills needed would be: -Creativity, Basic Jewelry Design or desire to design (formal training not necessary) -Basic Jewelry Assembly- No metal smithing, soldering, benchwork skills needed. -Computer literate, basic administration -Comfortable with online selling platforms -Some knowledge of wholesale/retail industry helpful. Business comes with full branding guide and library of jewelry photos additional design or photography can be outsourced or done in house. Any of the above can be outsourced.
