Business Story

Why this business was started

I started this business because I needed a second income and I didn't want to buy and hold inventory. Selling on-line as a drop shipper was the easiest to setup and with 3 kids I didn't want to spend alot of time with it. It's alot of fun and there is alot I didn't know about running a business that I wanted to learn. I saw alot of people I knew having great success with an at home business, so I knew I could do it! Making money in order to stay home with my kids is my main goal.

The reason of selling this business

I am starting a craft store, which is not related to this one I and want to focus my time and energy on it as I super excited about crafting. I find that I don't have the time for both stores. I know its a great store with fantastic potential, and we have alot of good reviews from customers. I've worked hard to create a great base and customer service, but am tired of the niche and want to move on to something else.

What's involved in running this business

I spend 5-10 hours a week answering emails, ordering products and investigating new products, running and monitoring ads. The email and sms campains and flows are written and don't need much time unless you change sales for seasonal gifts.

This business was founded: over 2 years ago
Time to run this business: approximately 10 hours per week

Other details about profit: I made over $45,000 in sales in my first year. It took me a few months to start making profits, but when I started I was making really good rate of return and I had a ton of people checking out the store daily. I found a great product and was focusing on that one and it did really well. Then I started testing other products and not focusing on the best seller and I noticed that the profits dropped a little. I decided I needed a few more winning products so am in the testing products mode. I now have 4 products that are really good sellers and am ready to start upping my advertising budget. If you understand dropshipping, having more than one winning product is the sign that you will do well. I haven't been advertising very much for the last few months as I am working on my other interests. so you will see the profits trending down. however, I know that these products will bring in alot of customers once I start the Facebook ads again. Also, I don't advertise currently on Google, so that is an untapped market. As well, Canada / Australia / UK are untapped markets as I focus mostly in the USA.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

I would increase email marketing, because I have alot of followers and people who have signed up to the store. That would increase customer and return customer order. I would focus on one or two products to brand because stores work better when you have a brand. I have been thinking about changing the logo as well to make it more "kid like". I have alot of influencers on instagram who want free products to recommend and are willing to work with me to promote the store. And I would start working with instagram accounts that compliment my store and work with them to always tag them, and they me, which helps increase followers. I think we should add a maternity section to the store, that sells well.

    Skills to have

Understand how dropshipping works. Understand kids and parents. Understand the needs of parents, like keeping kids from screaming in the car during travel or vacations and helping them to sleep, create a safe bedroom and importance of educational toys. Travelling with kids is a huge issue for parents and there are a ton of products to help with that. Understand what moms need from maternity to pre-school and how these products can help. Need to be able to take pictures of products and use them on one social media account. Facebook/instagram,

I am a mother of 3, and I started this store 2.5 years ago because I always wanted to have my own small business and have a second income as it's hard to make ends meet, and since COVID, everyone is buying online more often, so it's a great time to have an online business. It is the quickest way to engage customers and have a second income that I could find and I really appreciate all the help that Shopify gives you.
