Why this business was started

It was initially started as a base to sell locally manufactured aquascaping tools beyond just the industry leading reseller (Takealot). Selling through our own platforms, including Facebook, allowed us to sell at far more competitive prices. We then began increasing stock variety to gain credibility with our leads and thereafter began focusing more on quality.

The reason of selling this business

The reason is a personal one- I have decided to relocate into a rural area and take care of certain people who are no longer able to look after themselves. Having done this, I'd like to hand over this project.

What's involved in running this business

Advertising Campaigns on all platforms, except for one, are handled through Shopify's integration. The Facebook page usually has scheduled posts, although the lockdown has paused this. Our Newsletters are important in keeping people "re-engaged". Managing a CSV with product tags and categories is probably the most time-consuming part of this busines.

How to grow this business

The idea was to continue removing items that were not selling, were less desirable or were simply "low-quality" and cater towards the higher end of the market to become a trusted online retailer, in South Africa, for all equipment fish keeping related. Marketing is what keeps the business alive and our marketing channels are fantastic.

Skills to have

Everything has been done in a very straightforward manner and with a base understanding of Shopify, you should easily be able to pickup and run with this. The only learning curve will be the communication chain between suppliers and their pricelists.
