Business Story

Why this business was started

I was disabled last year from a horse riding accident and was unable to work. I had been selling my own designs on throw pillows using ebay and etsy for several years. I wanted to have my own website so I could add more products and promote them myself. I love looking at art and this was a way to sell art with a practical use so Art on your Pillow was born. My sister has grandchildren so I also added products for children that we had used with them and people bought them. This motivated me to add more products to the store that were not art related so I also added products I had used for my dogs and household items.

The reason of selling this business

Lack of time is the main reason I am selling his store. Since I opened this shopify store and learned how to operate it I took over the operation of my daughter's website for her brick and mortar store and have concentrated on that. I am no longer disabled. I now have a full time job and can ride my horse again almost every day. I just don't have time anymore for this store.

What's involved in running this business

Most of my sales have come from Pinterest and you will need to learn how to promote the products on Pinterest and keep up with listing items for sale. Products are automatically added onto the Pinterest platform but if you also make pins you will get more exposure. I have run facebook ads and have had sales from those ads. You can run ads on facebook. The processing of orders is easy with the Oberlo app that is installed. Finding new products to sell is also easy and enjoyable with this app. There is a large list of products already imported with the app that just need editing and pushing to the store. All of my sales have been drop shipped from suppliers in the USA and China. The more effort you are prepared to put into the running of this store and adding product listings the more money you will make. The theme is Shoptimized which I purchased for $125. You will need to keep up with updates and optimise the product pages with this theme. This is the best theme for ecommerce store and I got organic sales after I installed it. I recently added a Google Shopping app so the products automatically get uploaded but have not run any ads on Google yet. There is is a credit of $100 available for use for Google shopping ads which are cheap to run.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

I would finish the Pinterest course I started so I could optimize Pinterest and put daily pins on Pinterest which is free traffic. I would spend more time working on the site and adding products which automatically upload to Pinterest. I recently added a Google shopping app and I would use the $100 credit towards Google Shopping ads. I would also start email marketing; there is already an email list of customers and subscribers just from people visiting the site. I would also add instagram as a sales channel as this is a highly visual site. I have not done anything with the site for several months; working on it and adding the products I have already imported that just need editing and publishing would get get sales immediately. The theme I paid $125.00 for: Shoptimized has a drop down menu for the catalog and I would organize the products into categories and subcategories so buyers would be able to find what they are looking for easier. I would continue to run Facebook ads for the children's and pet products as these have been profitable. The facebook pixel is already "seasoned" and Facebook can optimize placements so the ads will reach buyers who are more likely to purchase

    Skills to have

Basic computer skills are all that are needed to start but the more you learn about utilising Pinterest, Instagram and Google Shopping the more money you will make. There are many free videos on Youtube you can use and also paid courses. I will tell you which paid courses I used.
