Business Story

Why this business was started

Founded in 2008 Artful Jeweler came about through a collaboration of teachers and students at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Recognizing that the internet was becoming a powerful tool for artists to market their work and at that time the internet lacked an online store dedicated exclusively to art jewelry, Velina Glass the then president of the Metals Guild of Maryland spearheaded this initiative by building and launching the new website. From the beginning, the artist-centered website attracted some of the most acclaimed jewelry artists in the industry from the groundbreaking enamel work of Baltimorian Shana Kroiz to the edgy street art of Boris Bally who transforms recycled street signs, weapon parts, and a wide variety of found materials into objects for reflection and adornment.

The reason of selling this business

I am an artist and teacher and would like to spend more time focusing on my own jewelry. I am one of the foremost resin artists in the country however my production of new work has suffered with the demands of the website. I have done the business a disservice by trying to excel at eccommerce, artistry and education.

What's involved in running this business

The best thing about this business is that there is no inventory costs! Thirty days after the completion of the sale the artists receive a 60% commission. There is always a significant bump in sales whevever we send out direct mail. I have included images from our catalogs. Artists provide their own images including model photographs. When an item sells I contact the artist, email them a label and then the artist ships the jewelry directly to the customer. The sales that have been generated over the past 3 years are are a result of mostly direct mail, organic marketing, social media and email marketing. If I were to purchase the business at this time I would invest in telephone order service, paid search, influencer marketing and direct mail via catalogs. The maintenance of the website is nominal due to the ease of the Shopify platform. The recruiting new artists, the addition of new products, keeping the home page fresh, writing and publishing emails and social media postings, and staying current with the Shopify tools rounds out the primary work requirements. Communication with the artists is essential. Existing artists help to recruit new artists. I often provide feedback as to what they can do to increase sales and to let them know what things are working well with their product offering. Sometimes I just call to chat. It is important to note that the quality of the artists is such that I have had only 2 returns in the past 10 years.

Seller‘s Advice

How to grow this business

As stated earlier I believe the most effective tools are 1. Catalog Sales, 2. Influence Marketing, Pinterest Advertising, Paid Search and Blog Advertising. I believe there is an opportunity to market to men during peak gift giving seasons e.g. Christmas, Valentine's Day and Engagement. Facebook marketing has been an ineffective tool.

Skills to have

I think it is key to having an excellent relationship with the artists because it is they who keep our customers happy. In 10 years we have had only 2 returns!
