Why this business was started

I started this business to create a lifestyle business opportunity for myself; since I had never created products before or worked in retail before, I believe I've taken it as far as I can without an injection of capital. I've laid the groundwork to create a brand that has a solid foundation of awareness and loyalty in the market.

The reason of selling this business

I have still had a great year in total revenue ($371K CAD) and am really proud of the gains I've created in profit margin (in the past 2 years I've taken it from 35% to 51% gross margin, 8% net in 2020). However, mistakes I made early in the business have eroded my ability to reinvest and I am ready to move on to other ideas. I think the right person will be able to take this established brand and invest in growing it to a more profitable and scalable business.

What's involved in running this business

Currently, I have a part-time team fulfill orders at a space I rent in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, but that does not have to be your fulfillment strategy - a US based business or someone using a warehouse on the CAN-US border would be able to take advantage of lower shipping rates. That same team manages customer service via the Gorgias App. If you re-introduce a US facing store with US based shipping, I would suggest the Atomic app to easily manage US returns (I did this when we ran product through the border via a cross-border delivery service). I originally chose to fulfill in-house because I used to have over 1,000 SKUs and self-fulfilling was cheaper. You will need to run (or outsource) our Instagram account, IG/FB/Google ads (I have a partner you could continue to work with), order from suppliers on a monthly/seasonal basis. I have strong relationships with all our core suppliers, and there are many new ones that I can help you connect with if you are looking to expand the store offering.

Other details about profit: This year has been unprofitable because I hired too many people and there have been challenges in marketing due to iOS14 and competitors entering the space. However, we still have very strong organic/direct reach every month, a loyal email list (35-45% of revenue per month), engaged IG following and have improved margins immensely this year. In 2020, I had a 8% net profit of about $2K USD per month (averaged for seasonality - high Q2 and Q4 results). I believe I was stretched too thin with creating the new line this year and while it was very successful (60% gross margins + 65% sell through in 2 months despite a decline in overall sales), I didn't have the operating efficiencies to be profitable. I think someone with experience growing brands from the $350-500K level and above would be able to easily take this brand and grow it. Additionally, I pulled away from the US market to focus on Canada, so there is huge opportunity to dive back into the US market (Please note, until November 2021, I had an identical US store running so the reports and total sales/orders/revenue are much larger when you consider both stores. You will be buying the .com domain in this sale as well).

    How to grow this business

    In 2021, I created a Canadian made line of organic cotton basics with great margins; but I have not been able to scale it up to the level needed to sustain the whole store due to lack of capital to invest. I believe you could either run the store as is and continue to supplement my products with other brands OR take the Azura Bay Canadian line to the next level by marketing it directly, adding colours, adding wholesale, etc.

    Skills to have

    The new owner should definitely have great marketing skills as well as knowledge of clothing production. I would be happy to help with the transition in any way that you'd find helpful.
