Why this business was started

I created this business in 2012 when I first came across a product within this niche at a specialty store. I fell in love with the product and was at the same time amazed that it was made from high quality materials and ingredients. I felt like a kid again because the specialty shop was filled with all kinds of products imported from all over the country and the world from brands that I had never heard of before. With the product in hand, I decided to do some research and found a distributor for the product. To my amazement, I learned that this niche was far larger than I had ever thought possible. Not only were there thousands of these products that I never heard of before, but with even more research, I found that there were a lot of distributors for these products and a healthy market for these items. To top it all off, all of the suppliers for this product were open to drop-shipping, so this meant that I didn’t have to have the inventory in hand. It was at this moment that I decided to create this business as a way to share the unique experience of joy I had at the specialty shop with others. I wanted to create a business that sells every single one of these hard-to-get items, and that is what I sought out to create.

The reason of selling this business

This business is the fourth business that I created in my life, and it represents the culmination of the best processes and knowledge I learned from the previous businesses. My first business was started in 2005 and this current business was started in 2012. Each business I founded had their own ups and downs and provided me learning opportunities on how I can make the next one better. This business has definitely been fun and has been a passion project of mine for the last 8 years. It was the first business where I had the financial ability to hire contractors and systemize the processes so that someone else could do the day-to-day work and entirely run the business if needed. It took me a while to figure out how to get sales consistently and how to document all the processes that are necessary to run the business, but now things are good. I am grateful for the growth this business has experienced and I could run this company forever.

During the time I had this business, I got into video podcasting and blogging. I have created 50 episodes since 2013. However, I haven’t been able to work on it for the last 2 years and really feel that I want to get back into podcasting and blogging full time as an entirely new opportunity. I want to have the ability to focus 100% of my attention on a new venture. While this current e-commerce business is profitable and fun, I want to see if I can shift gears to something completely different.

We are the largest online retailer in the United States for products in this niche. This business model is 100% drop-shipping so no inventory is needed. You only buy products after a sale has already been made and profit from the difference between what you sell the item for and what you buy it for. I work with a handful of suppliers across the country. The day-to-day work can be done entirely from a laptop and can also be outsourced to a contractor since everything is systemized and repeatable. It costs under $9 a day to run the business and this can be decreased by removing some software expenses.

I discovered a niche industry that has reliable suppliers and few competitors. I listed all products available in my niche for sale, and created systems and processes to manage the day-to-day operations. I set up a business strategy using drop shipping that guarantees the business to be profitable. I cut out all expenses of the business so it is very lean.

Other details about profit: Take home profit is approximately 15% of revenue after expenses. I did approximately $211,000 in revenue in a one week period during the month of March 2020 due to the Coronavirus demand for my product. I could have made more revenue but the sales were too overwhelming and I had to put my store on pause for over a week. Since re-opening my store, competition for the particular product increased significantly, so this caused daily sales to decrease. The last 7 days profit (March 28 to April 4) was $2200.
