I started this business as a side project while staying at home with my newborn where I could channel my passion for early child's development, wooden toys and Montessori philosophy. This store is built with love and care, I did a lot of research, followed parenting and Montessori blogs to find the products I believe in that parents like myself would want to buy.

The reason of selling this business

I didn't expect this store to take off this fast when it did and have realized that it would take more time than I could commit to it. Even as a side hustle it now takes time away from my family and other initiatives. It was a great learning experience and I am ready to move on. Hopefully, someone with the same passion can run and grow this store further.

    How to grow this business

    The store is 1 year old, I spent first six month optimizing its design, flow and funnel. I wanted to create an upscale kids/design looking store and not a dropshipping store; an ever-green business that can be a source of income for years to come, a shop for parents like me, be user-friendly, welcoming, and a pleasure to shop at.
    We have social media presence (about 500 folowers) on IG, FB, Pinterest and a list of influencers who wishes to work with us. I have a strong winner and a handful of upsells which bring my AOV to ~$80. We are currently in the top 9% of stores by traffic among the stores launched at the same time. The store has a custom logo, well planned front page/product pages, funnel, it is mobile-optimized, easy-to navigate and fast-loading. I had a few hundred dollars in sales around BFCM 2019, which weren't too profitable. After learning more about marketing and spotting a trend in April 2020, I had ~$14K sales on about 6 weeks. As soon as I realized the scale of the Coronavirus-caused delays, I decided to pause selling and to only focus on customer service for the existing orders. Excellent customer service is very important to me, I put a lot of effort into building lasting relationships with my customers and have had people place repeating orders (3.3%), and recommend us to their friends and families. Even in the light of Covid-19 delays (some orders taking longer than 60 days to arrive), I had only processed a handful of refunds, which I attribute to my frequent proactive updates, email communication and putting my customer first. I run the store alone, and on a busy day (up to 20 orders, ~$1.5K) it'd take me up to 2 hours answering customer inquiries (reply within 12-24 hours), placing orders, marketing etc. Unfortunately, even this was too much commitment for me, and there are so many ideas and avenues I wished to explore that I didn't have time to.

    There is a huge potential to scale the store 10x by scaling FB ads, working with influencers, exploring other marketing channels and/or expanding to another countries. Many of other products in the store I believe to be winners, because they have sold often without me ever advertising them. If you have a passion for children's education/development, good taste, and time on your hands to dedicate consistently to growing this business - it can become a solid full time income.

    Skills to have

    Having kids would definitely help, as well as interest in child’s development, Montessori, and sustainability. There are endless ways to engage your audience besides selling to them, for example sharing activities with kids, educating them on Montessori and other educational approaches, sharing quotes and great content from other bloggers. Being an "insider" in this audience helps greatly with writing the product descriptions, ad copies and spotting future winners.
