Why this business was started

I started this store after seeing the issues around plastic pollution in Southeast Asia. It tuned out that there was a plentiful solution to at least one of the main culprits in plastic straws.

Bambew was originallly formed with a mission to divert plastic straws from the landfill by producing reusable, biodegradable alternatives from natural bamboo. Since then, the company has grown to include a range of other products, servicing hundreds of customers in numerous countries around the world.

The reason of selling this business

We have come to realize that maybe ecommerce isn't right for us. Whilst it's been an amazing ride, we see that the brand can grow far quicker with someone passionate about the space and can see the potential of cause-driven projects like this

Ultimately, our preference is to move towards different projects and there are only so many hours in the day. It's been hard to delegate day to day control and bring in VAs and other help. We've been just too close. So it's all in or out... and we've chosen to let this go.

With someone that is not as emotionally invested in the company and has more experience in ecommerce, there is almost boundless potential for this brand.

The business is effectively a turnkey operation. We will provide access to our contacts and faciiliator in Vietnam that is able to handle all aspects of fulflllment.

You can either send the products from your own base or use the services of a third party fulfillment agenct like Shipbob or Shipmonk once there are retail sales to support this.

Other details about profit: We sell to some customers outside of Shopify through our store on Etsy. We incorporated the company in Singapore in Dec 2019 and had an arrangemnt where a surcharge was added to products in order to cover operational costs in Vietnam. This distorts the profitability for 2020, making it appear as though we had less profit than what we in fact did.

    How to grow this business

    Pivot towards a direct to consumer model. We have traditionally only sold wholesale quantities due to the costs associated with sending from Vietnam. With some up-front investment in stock, it will be possible to sell in smaller quantities with a much higher margin.

    Work in collabortion with other eco-friendly brands in Instagram competitions and other collabs to build a following, creating a movement-driven brand with strong brand identity.

    Further strengthen relationship with Vietnamese partners and build upon a stable base of wholesale orders.

    Expand the product lines to include more textile-based products. We also have a working prototype of a first-of-its-kind biodegradable portable ashtray that is ideal for festivals, events, beaches and other outdoor activities.

    Skills to have

    A knowledge of how to use Shopify would be very useful. As with any ecommerce endeavour, a working knowledge of SEO, data analysis and media buying skills will come in handy.
