Why this business was started
I set up Barista Shop back in 2018, It was set up as a side project as i had a keen interest in coffee and wanted to set up an online store which offered all the toys to the home enthusiast, many of our customers are coffee shops
The reason of selling this business
Due to other work and business commitments i haven't been able to fulfil the potential of the business.
What's involved in running this business
We generate traffic through Google, Facebook and instagram, these could be done much better than we do currently. We don't do anything specifically to convert the traffic to sales but if people leave the basket, we do send an auto mail with a discount code if they complete the purchase. We are not very good at maintaining customer relations as we do not send mail shots to existing customers which would be a good way of generating additional business as new products arrive and some old ones that suppliers may ask to push. Once an order comes in the work required is uploading the information to our suppliers site. We do have a reasonable returning customer rate but we do not do anything to encourage this activity at the moment.

How to grow this business
At the beginning of Lockdown in March I increased the google advertising budget and saw sales rocket to c.£10,000 per month, I reduced the ad spend when my other business meant that i had no time to focus on Barista Shop. This was around August time. Sales dropped as i stopped the google spend apart from £10 p/m and also we stopped the facebook posts. I would concentrate on growing the business on Facebook, insta and google to get sales up which it has been in the past and focus on repeat custom which we don't at the minute. I also think that good old telephone or email marketing to a database of coffee shops and resturants would also help to grow the business. I also never focused on coffee machine sales which i dont think would come from just someone buying on the internet. but we did sell 2 from enquiries that came from the website. The profit margin in machines is good and 1 or 2 machine sales per month would transform the business into a gold mine. I also think that by increasing online content and blogs someone could very quickly become the coffee expert as the market is not that big and the website has a reasonable following now. I havent ever tried that as i have been too busy with my other business. if someone has the time i would also recommend improving the listing descriptions as mine where just copied from the manufacturers site and make sure that the latest products where available on the shop. The store has over 2300 customers which is a great base to start.
Skills to have
You will require some basic IT/computer skills but it is generally very simple to run. if you do not have any design or Shopify experience this element can be outsourced which i did for the site build. I did learn quickly how to add and remove products which is very simple. If you have some knowledge of re-sizing images as this tends to be the biggest issue i have had in the past as the high res images sent by the manufacturer are too large for Shopify and need to be reduced in file size. If you have a basic understanding of google PPC and facebook that would also be a major advantage but again can be outsourced or learnt by watching google videos which are quite good.
