Business Story

Why this business was started

We were approached by the previous owner, ClickStop Inc., as they had decided Belly Bling was not a fit for their broader eCommerce business model. In reviewing the financials and reaching an agreement on terms, we felt confident that Belly Bling was a viable entrance to an eCommerce business that could also supplement our income. We still believe our rationale in buying the business to be true, we simply did not fully contemplate the demands of full time jobs and active children which did not allow us to focus on the business as much as needed.

The reason of selling this business

The current owners have both held full-time jobs outside of Belly Bling since taking on ownership in late 2014. Coupled with the time constraints of raising a young family, the Steele’s have simply not been able to commit the time needed to make Belly Bling the company it could be.

This company has a ton of upside potential, it just needs focus and commitment to build it back to the sales success is saw in its early years of operation. This is a business opportunity with large upside potential for the right owner. Sales in the five years prior to our ownership(2010-2014) ranged from $300-$435k annually, with owner’s discretionary income of $150k+.

What's involved in running this business

The current owners run Belly Bling almost exclusively with just themselves as the staff. We have various individuals identified and trained to support the business when the owners are out of town, but that need has been minimal.

Belly Bling staff fulfill orders, handle customer service, social media and advertising campaigns, and drop off packages at the post office each day. One owner spends about 5-8 hours a week placing inventory orders, updating products on the Shopify platform, and handling light accounting responsibilities. Incoming phone calls are in the single digits each week and emails are minimal as well. This business can be run with a very small staff.

Other details about profit: We are selling our company with the knowledge that our annual sales are far below what they could be. There is a material upside possibility to this company as shown in the financials from 2011-2014 when the business was operating under greater scrutiny and attention. With the right focus and attention to growth opportunities, this company can quickly return to previous profit levels of 5-10 years ago.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

Focus on the 3 key areas: 1) Search Engine Optimization(SEO): The greatest amount of focus to improve the financial results of Belly Bling is SEO. If the new owner has this skill set and knowledge that is a great, but this is also a service that can be contracted for through many SEO providers. 2) Social media/email marketing: We currently have 32.5k Facebook followers, 2.5k Instagram followers and 19k email subscribers. There is much more that could be done from a marketing perspective across these avenues than what we have had time to focus on. Daily, weekly, and monthly campaigns are a relatively inexpensive and under utilized marketing path for Belly Bling. The customer base for Belly Bling's products are social media users. 3) Product offerings: Throughout the history of Belly Bling, owners have added and removed products from their offerings to stay aligned with the demand interests of our customers. That said, there is always opportunity for product additions that span beyond belly button rings. Ear gauges, additional nose ring and tongue ring options, nipple rings, etc. are just a few avenues in the body jewelry family that could be further leveraged for growth opportunity on the website. These items are all available through the current wholesale suppliers.

    Skills to have

Skills to have, learn, or find support partners for: 1) Search Engine Optimization(SEO): A key component to being found as an eCommerce business is fine tuning your search engine results. This is a skill that a future owner can either have or learn and there are also many companies out there that will own this on your behalf. 2) Social media/marketing/email campaigns: Getting your product out in front of as many potential buyers as possible is important and the use of social media platforms and direct mail campaigns are important avenues to utilize. Like SEO, this is a skill that can be learned or outsourced once you find the right partnerships. 3) Software/system navigation and maintenance: You do not need to be a highly technical person to run and operate this business but you will need to be able to navigate various platforms that make up the back-end of the company. Shopify and Quickbooks are two key systems that we rely on which are not overly complex but do require daily/weekly interaction to keep maintained.

The current owners, Chris and Dana Steele, purchased Belly Bling in late 2014 from ClickStop, Inc. From the date of purchase through current day, both owners have maintained full-time careers outside of Belly Bling along with raising two teenage children. Neither had experience in owning an eCommerce business prior to purchasing Belly Bling or deep knowledge of the body jewelry industry so the past 5 years have been a fascinating and fulfilling learning experience for us both. We look forward to introducing you to Belly Bling!
