Why this business was started

I started this company out of my personal need for the new product and interest in the growing niche market for inspiring “boss babes”. I found myself starting to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic and feeling eye strain and headaches from spending hours on my laptop. As I looked for what I’ve previously heard of as “bluelight blocking glasses”, I couldn’t find any pairs that were stylish and affordable without looking long and hard on Amazon for a poorly marketed pair with many unreliable reviews. Why was it so hard to find a stylish pair from a brand that inspired me? I started this business because I saw the gap in the market for affordable and stylish bluelight blocking glasses that were marketed for the working “boss babe” woman.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone had to temporarily adjust to online work/school environments which means more screen time. Looking forward to the permanent online changes in our lifestyles for working and studying, the future demand for bluelight blocking glasses is increasingly growing and here to stay. Women who work from home, who run their own businesses, and who are studying in school is a demographic that spends copious amounts of time online, and are large consumers of fashion goods. Our glasses are affordable, stylish, and have a brand built around inspiring the everyday hustling woman.

The reason of selling this business

There are several main reasons we have decided to sell our business and some underlying factors that have contributed. We have discussed selling this business ever since our sales increased in August and we found we could no longer find the time to manage this business on the side. I am a full-time university student and my business partner works full time at his tech company for his co-op. As I mentioned earlier, we are both committed to completing our university degrees, and want to see this company thrive in more experienced hands. Another large factor that is contributing to this decision is that Ben’s company is in the midst of an acquisition. While this would be a life-changing opportunity for him, he will likely be moving to Europe for up to a year, and it would be difficult to communicate and continually grow this company in such different time zones on such different schedules. The final reason is that Facebook recently restricted our ad account due to a policy violation. We are in search of a buyer who has been able to overcome this issue or has experience advertising elsewhere. We do not have the time to learn other advertising platforms right now and would love to see a professional team or ambitious entrepreneur take this company to its full potential!

What's involved in running this business

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve spent my time managing our social media (mostly Instagram), choosing products and answering emails while Ben has spent his time managing the finances and advertising on Facebook. We were very fortunate to find a supplier in China quickly who has exceeded our expectations. They have a team that is connected to our Shopify store via a Shopify app and fulfill our orders automatically. We wire transfer them US Dollars and they order our products to their warehouse, repackage them, ship them, and fulfill our orders on Shopify with tracking numbers. If our products are damaged in transit, the wrong product was sent, or the package never leaves China, they reship the order for free. Every order is sent in a nice cloth bag with a cleaning cloth and a cute thank-you note for supporting our small business. As our orders have increased, our supplier has upgraded our shipping times from 10-15 days to 5-8 days for the United States. While this has been fantastic, we are aware that if we purchased our products in bulk we would be able to get a lower product price and increase our margins.

As our orders have increased and our relationship has improved, our supplier has upgraded our shipping times from 10-15 days to 5-8 days for the United States. They send us photos of products when we are deciding which ones to put on our store and communicate with us quickly (with good english).

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

    The biggest praise we’ve received has been for our branding, and our biggest criticism has been our shipping times. If we had the time and experience, we would order our products in bulk and move our fulfillment to the US. This would lower both our product costs and our shipping times, which would in-turn lower our refunds and improve our customer reviews. In order to grow this company to its potential we would begin capitalizing on the brand with different products (CEO Accessories, CEO Fashion, etc.). We have a growing list of customer emails which we could begin marketing new CEO products to or offer new deals on our Glasses. We would learn other forms of advertising such as Google Ads, Pinterest Ads, Snapchat Ads, Influencer marketing, etc and begin advertising on more platforms. We have discussed these possibilities but neither of us have the time or experience to delegate and grow this company at this stage of our lives. Both of us are full time students with a commitment to finishing our degrees and want to see this company thrive in more experienced hands.
