Business Story

Why this business was started

I decided to start this business as a side-hustle to generate some extra income and put myself out there into the eCommerce world. This was more of a learning project for me that something I would do for a lifetime. I was also very attracted by the flexible working nature, the freedom this business provides and very low operating expenses in running the brand.

The reason of selling this business

I would love to continue on with this online store since it requires very little effort to operate and I have access to an outstanding supplier for sourcing products. However, I am trying to move on from physical products to digital products and currently working on starting my own marketing agency with all the experience I gained from Centauri Gear so I'd like to allocate all my time towards that.

What's involved in running this business

There are essentially 4 aspects to running and growing this business: Marketing, Order Fulfillment, Customer Service and Market Research.

Marketing: This is where you're going to be spending a major chunk of your efforts and creativity. While I only primarily used Facebook Ads for everything, it would be highly effective if you can branch out to other digital marketing mediums such as Google Ads, SEO, Tik-Tok, Influencer Marketing and Public Relations. If you are a good marketer, you will have much higher net profit margins in the end if you can acquire new customers at a lower cost. I also use Email Marketing to engage with my audience, improve conversion rates and retain customers in the long run with higher customer lifetime values. A majority of the email marketing aspect is already automated and setup so you wouldn't have to worry too much about it.

Order Fulfillment: I have a major supplier who fulfills and ships out the products directly to customers. The supplier is able to store, pack and ship out any products that you come across online on wholesale websites. This process is done using an automated Excel Macro which I developed so it requires very little effort - you can export the orders everyday from Shopify, sort and arrange it according to supplier requirements and send it over to him and he'll send back the same excel sheet with all the tracking numbers. Regardless of how you decide to handle your order fulfillment (whether it is using a private supplier, an overseas fulfillment company or a 3PL platform), everything can be automated so the work involved her is extremely low.

Customer Service: This takes the most time out of running this business but it is also the easiest things to outsource for a very low cost. You will generally be required to answer any customer emails with regard to order status, shipping status, etc. If you're familiar with a CRM software such as HubSpot, ZenDesk or FreshDesk, this can be done much more efficiently. And as mentioned earlier, this is where you want your first employees.

Market Research: If you want to scale this business into a long-term brand, you'd need to do some basic market research about the cycling industry, see what's trending and what cycling enthusiasts are doing to stay on top of the game and beat out the competition. This is not something you do daily but rather more of a time-to-time research on industry trends.

Basic IT Skills: Photoshop, Website Design and Graphical Design are recommended but not necessary. Most of these can be outsourced at a very low cost.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

The business would suit an enthusiastic and savvy digital marketer with a passion for eCommerce and Sporting Goods. It would also be perfect for an existing eCommerce entrepreneur who would like to add Centauri Gear into their portfolio.

Moreover, I have valuable customer feedback/recommendation from hundreds of past customers who would love to improve a particular product by adding new features and modifying existing specifications. This would be a great fit for someone who is interested in developing their own product with the help of a design agency and getting it patented; there's already a proven market demand and my current supplier can assist with the manufacturing. This would be great for a Kickstarter or an Indiegogo project.

Some of the areas that I would improve upon would be diversifying the marketing mediums to other marketing and social media channels besides Facebook (which is pretty much the only channel I use), making the store SEO optimized for more organic traffic and growth, simple things as improving the landing pages and site load speed with an overall new design of the current website.

Moreover, I would also start private labeling the products and use a 3PL (3rd party fulfillment) partner to further scale and grow this business with amazing branding and super fast shipping times.

    Skills to have

The business would suit an enthusiastic and savvy digital marketer with a passion for eCommerce and Sporting Goods. It would also be perfect for an existing eCommerce entrepreneur who would like to add Centauri Gear into their portfolio.

I definitely recommend having good digital marketing skills that is diverse. If you're good at Facebook Ads - that's great because there is already a ton of Facebook data from the past. Other than that, every skill in terms of operations, order fulfillment, handling customer service, etc. is very easy to learn and acquire.

If you are good at leading a business as a CEO by developing any necessary frameworks and workflows for your employees/freelancers to work efficiently, this is a goldmine because there will be very less work involved.

Centauri Gear was launched in January 2018 by me as a completely remotely-operated eCommerce business on the Shopify Platform using the dropshipping business model. I launched this business as a way to enter into the eCommerce world with low upfront and operating costs. However, at the moment I have shifted my focus towards digital products so I no longer have the time to dedicate to this particular store with the passion and enthusiasm as I did earlier.
