I began this business because I needed a way to make extra money while I grew my main business, a 4 season farm. My farm sells microgreens and mushrooms to 60 different restaurants in Northwest Colorado. We are also working on a food waste composting program that will allow us to turn food waste in to animal feed and electricity which can be used to power the farm.
The reason of selling this business
I am selling this business because I thought I could run a successful drop-ship store as a side hustle. Unfortunately, I underestimated how much time the e-commerce store would take. After a year and a half of splitting my efforts, I realize I'm not able to focus on either business as much as it needs, and they are both suffering because of it. I am choosing to sell the e-commerce store. There is a lot of opportunity, and it's hard to let it go after all the time, money, and energy I have put in to it, but I have to choose the business that truly inspires me.
What's involved in running this business
Day to day operations amount to answering questions from potential customers through email or phone calls (I had an 800 number for the store that routed to my cell phone), fulfilling orders, and moving money around between shopify, credit cards, and bank accounts. All in all, this part takes approximately an hour a day. To stay ahead of the competition, and accelerate the sales, I estimate it would take another 4-6 hours a week to stay involved in the drop ship course community, learn the newest marketing and advertising tricks, partner with new manufacturers, and strategize ways to open new sales channels.

Carports sell. It's as simple as that. People want them. They are willing to spend thousands of dollars online to get them. Because of that, online competition is fierce. However, for the person who has 1-3 hours a day to dedicate to this store, to learning the newest tricks in online marketing, there is enormous room for growth. Covered Cars has a great layout, looks professional, already offers financing through a partner (Klarna), and has every aspect needed to run it in place. The best opportunity lies in offering installations. Labor to install would be minimal as these units are designed to be assembled straight out of the box, but you could charge a premium for this service. This would be a great way to maximize the margins on each sale. I have had numerous customers ask if we offer installations, and I have spoken to other carport companies (DaCraft in Ohio) who said their customers don't care how much they have to pay to get their carport installed. Another excellent path for growth is to find new manufacturer's who don't have a strong presence in the U.S. I received an email just a few days ago from a Japanese manufacturer looking to expand their sales in the U.S.
Skills to have
The best skill for this industry is customer service. People often times want reassurance before they make a large purchase online. Being able to talk to people in a patient and positive way makes them feel comfortable buying from you. Also, to make this store a great deal, and to ensure the new owner is successful, I will include access to the online drop-ship training course I purchased when I first opened the store.
