Why this business was started

I've been running this business for several years as a side hustle. I had been working as a data analyst during the day but was wanting to learn the eCommerce ropes. It's been great as a first online business as I've been making money from day one. I think it helps that the products are unique and can be personalised. Most customers that leave a review give the products and service a 5-star review. This is helped by an efficient system that I have created over the years.

The reason of selling this business

I now run other businesses that require my attention (web services and another eComm business). I used to love hearing that Shopify "cha-ching", however, after turning my focus on other ventures the "cha-ching" doesn't motivate me as much. So I thought I'd either sell this or else hire a V.A. to run and grow this.

What's involved in running this business

At present this is a one-person eCommerce store. To run the store it involves processing orders, answering e-mails and despatching orders either by yourself or external suppliers (I do both). Also the site may require maintenance if you add or update products. I've coded some pages to reduce the number of apps required. To grow the store I have done some SEO, e-mail marketing and Facebook ads. I have tried other marketing channels but I find these three work for me.

    How to grow this business

    Relative to revenue I have not spent much on paid sales channels. CAC for the last 12-months is $15. I have used Facebook marketing and on average ROAS is 4. I would look at increasing FB marketing. The following numbers for the various social-media platforms are as follows: Instagram (2 accounts) 12.5K and Facebook 400. The e-mail list is around 1.3K.

    For SEO, there is a lot more keywords the business could target. It already ranks #1 in Google search for several keywords.

    I would also look at expanding the e-mail list. I don't e-mail that much, however, I generate sales every time I launch a campaign.

    I dropship from several local and international suppliers. I have also started to keep some of the popular products in-house. Shipping time for local suppliers is around 3-business days. For international suppliers it's around 10-business days. This business could easily migrate to a full eCommerce store with the right inventory management and tools. This would decrease shipping costs and time and also allow a greater selection of products. For the international supplier I use mainly one as they provide product personalisation.

    There is also HUGE potential to market on other social and sales channels. I have looked other channels, however, have found focussing on 3-channels is enough for a one-man band. If I were to keep the business I would look at hiring VA's to run the admin side. I would then run the marketing and start using other sales channels.

    I do get b2b orders. These customers buy bulk for their own stores or staff. I would look at this market for possible growth.

    Skills to have

    I have developed systems for the business so it can be run by one person. I have documented some operating procedures to help with the hand-over. For customer service I use a ticketing system which helps track requests. E-mail flows and campaigns are handled by Klaviyo. SEO and Facebook marketing skills would be handy, however, I can help the new owner to learn these skills if needed. If you have experience with other sales channels then this could replace the required Facebook or SEO skills.
