Business Story

Why this business was started

I wanted to be in retail and I love dogs and dog products are fun and make people happy. I kind of fell into it looking for something to sell.

The reason of selling this business

I am moving and sick and can no longer sit at the computer for hours at a time despite loving this business.

What's involved in running this business

Fulfilling orders, keeping products fresh and fun, adding new products when finding them, ordering from suppliers and managing drop ship orders (we stock and drop-ship, you can do a combo or one or the other), advertising runs itself pretty much. Keeping up with returns and customer service via email and phone calls and live chat. Marketing and social media. Managing inventory. Managing vendors. Maximizing your profit margins and minimize overhead would help make this business a lot more money, I just never tried. Someone else can make a lot of money with this site, if they wanted to, we also have a huge customer base being sold with the business.

This business was founded: about 5 years ago
Time to run this business: approximately 20 hours per week

Other details about profit: When I first started, sales went up yearly and I was able to get them up to about $150,000 for a year. There was a dip under $100,000 for a few years do to some major issues with search engines and my health at the same time, then I built it back up starting in the past few years to these... there is still so much someone else could do with the site and at least double these numbers, you just need to get more people to the site. That is key and giving great customer service. The site did $137,233.28 in 2021 (only went down because I can't really work anymore because of my health, it should have gone up), average order was and $153,442.91 in total sales in 2020, average order was $52.35. I don't pay enough time paying attention to advertising costs and pay way more then I should, if managed properly, you can maximize profits from advertising and minimize advertising costs, for sure! Our social media potential according to Facebook and Instagram is 214,400,000 - 252,200,000 followers, so there is big potential with the site and I would love to see someone do something great with it! All the numbers given as averages in this listing when showing an average is averaged over the past two years divided by 24 months. I bring in way more then $587 a month, but Shopify averaged in months where we were transitioning from another shopping platform and weren't yet up and running and we were forced by Shopify to only list a $587 income a month but it's more like $2400 on a decent month, more during the holidays and tons of potential.
