Why this business was started

We decided to start Doodl because we both love art and design. We believe that art can be affordable and obtainable by everyone, everywhere. We decided to offer printable art so that people could enjoy inexpensive, instant décor for their spaces. We completely understand the struggle of commitment to expensive art, and also love constant change. Our goal was to empower people to make the most out of their rooms by unlocking their walls’ potential.

Even though we are in love with this project and we are very passionate about it, we don't have the time and economic resources it requires to grow it exponentially. Besides, we just got an opportunity to move abroad and we are dedicating all our time and resources to this venture.

What's involved in running this business

Doodl is an awesome business because the product fulfillment process is fully automated. It is a print-on-demand online store integrated with Printful (an awesome provider that prints, fulfills orders, and ships internationally). Since our ~900 product catalog is fully synced with Printful, when a physical product is sold on Doodl, Printful will do the job for you. When a digital product is sold on Doodl (printable art - print it yourself), the customer will automatically receive a link to download the files (we use an app called FetchApp).

All you have to do is: - Grow the catalog periodically (follow our detailed product creation manual) - Sync physical products (posters, framed posters) to Printful - Sync digital products (printable art files) to FetchApp - Marketing (email campaigns, run Facebook ads) - Manage social media (create posts, stories, influencer collabs) - Handle customer support - Administrative tasks such as bookkeeping

Even though we opened our Shopify store two years ago, we have only been investing time and money on it for five months (since May 2021). We are beginners on Facebook Ads and we haven't been able to break even yet. Our best ROAS (return of ad spend) in a two week period has been 3.24. Our Facebook ads results have not been consistent.

    How to grow this business

    We would recommend to: - Expand the product catalog periodically, based on home decor trends (do basic research on social media). Doodl already has around 900 products (original pieces, licensed images for commercial use, images by artists/photographers, and public domain images). - Run Facebook ads. If you can invest in them as your main marketing tool, they can be a very powerful tool. - Try running Google ads (we haven't tried Google ads yet but we've had several organic sales from search engine results). - Try influencer marketing: micro influencers (product for post) and macro influencers (paid posts and stories). We have found this effective. - Keep up and improve good SEO (search engine optimization) practices. We have implemented several SEO practices in the past year. Use keywords, product descriptions (all our ~900 products have descriptions), metatags, ALT texts, hire blog post writers on Fiverr, etc. - Continue expanding newsletter subscribers list (we have almost 3000 subscribers on Klaviyo at the moment). - Keep doing contemporary artist collaborations to expand the catalog and expand Doodl's reach on social media. - Keep growing the instagram community ( by planning posts and stories (we have been using Planoly and Canva), posting daily, engaging with the community, etc. - Expand team as necessary. Implement manuals to automate processes (we already have a super detailed step-by-step product creation manual that we'll give you). Create as many manuals as needed for the different processes you'd like to automate. - Expand on print-on-demand product offerings such as wall tapestries, rugs, towels, tote bags, phone cases, mugs, t-shirts, pillowcases, blankets, etc. Doodl currently sells printable art files (print it yourself), posters, and framed posters (black frame, white frame).
