Business Story

Why this business was started

I have started a couple of businesses in the past and the itch to do so again arose. I wanted to bring a lot of items together into a furniture and homewares marketplace as I get frustrated buying household items online so saw a gap to do a better job.

The reason of selling this business

Unfortunately I keep burning out and cannot dedicate the time or resources needed to the store to really make it grow and shine as it should. A new owner with more time and better skills at outsourcing would be able to quickly grow the social media presence of this store and sales would quickly climb past first month sales of over $10,000. The store was professional designed for optimsation and a lot of backend work has been done in the mean time to improve its performance. With more time, better outsourcing and a clear vision for marketing, this store will grow beyond 7 figures I believe.

What's involved in running this business

Currently I have outsourced listing of products and are currently completing all on page SEO for every item in the store. Starting next month we will start off page SEO to improve rankings. If you want to get more listings done then you would need to do some product listings yourself (I currently pay for 50 products to be listed a month which includes custom description, on page SEO and unique title). Orders have not been huge as marketing has been limited since January due to burnout but you will process orders at this point (would be easy enough to outsource once the store grows). You will deal with suppliers and continue to find new suppliers that are based in Australia to grow product list and really build a marketplace offering going forward. I was using an agency to run Facebook/Instagram ads but had to stop doing so due to burnout so currently Google Smart Campaign is setup to run automatically (same with Microsoft), SEO is being completed and is outsourced. TikTok first ad was run recently (outsourced) but I would suggest bringing that in house to grow the channel if desired. At this point now you can either hire an agency to continue to run FB/IG ads or do it yourself. Store uses dropshipping business model so inventory is nil and you can order products as sold.

Other details about profit: Sales were consistently over $10,000 (AUD) a month for first 3 months of store operation. Then sales dropped as I had to stop using a marketing agency to run FB/IG ads due to burnout and being unable to keep up supply of product videos to make this marketing worthwhile. Original supplier used carries margins of 13-15% due to being widely used. Newer suppliers are running 30-50% margins which as SEO is improved will start to make up a greater share of sales which will improve profitability. Since mid January when the marketing agency stopped I haven't run FB/IG ads (started again 2 days ago but cannot continue due to life circumstances). Sales have come from Google mostly. A $10,000/month in sales the store would have been profitable if we weren't paying the marketing agency to run the ads (I was paying AUD4,000). I estimate overall that currently if you made that level of sales a month you would make around 10% net profits which would grow as sales grow as most costs are fixed or grow slower than sales grow. At this stage due to limited marketing efforts (burnout) the store hasn't had a profitable month. Note: In the last couple of months work in the store has been limited due to burnout. Profit margins have been nothing as basic store subscriptions and costs to setup and improve SEO mean that the store has been making losses. Once sales begin to improve these costs won't change so the store will become profitable. Advertising costs are variable and so will increase as used more which will also influence profitability. To improve sales and profitability, the buyer will need to apply consist efforts and start marketing on FB/IG/TikTok (pixel is currently setup) and Google (have only been running a smart campaign at AUD10/day for monthly sales achieved). I cannot put profit as USD0 or a loss as it isn't accepted, nor is putting a current profit margin of 0%.

The buyer will most likely have to reapply for supplier relationships but I will send an email to all current suppliers along with the new buyers details to start this process and hopefully maintain relationships. I will also let you know details of current person who is doing SEO (have been setting up on page SEO which I have now stopped temporarily. Buyer will be able to continue with this and ongoing monthly fees that were going to be paid for off-page SEO would be USD1,000/month. If buyer doesn't want to pay this then this cost can be removed from calculations) and product listings so you can decide if they are right for you and continue these services if desired (product listings are optimised for SEO and unique description is written. Cost is USD10/listing). Currently 4 Australian suppliers are used. Buyer will also need to reapply for Buy Now, Pay Later providers as in the contracts for companies currently used (Afterpay & Humm), a store sale means the services will be cancelled.
