Why this business was started

I started my Shopify store because I have an entrepreneurial spirit and I like projects that allow me to use my creative side. A Shopify print on demand store store seemed like a great way to make some money combining those two interests. Plus, I have experience writing SEO website and product copy for a very large well-known retailer in the outdoor space.

The reason of selling this business

I put a ton of time and effort into setting up my store, uploading designs, writing good copy that was both optimized for the search engines, as well as written for shoppers. But in the end, I simply didn't have the time available to create and test ads, nor did I have the funds available to stay consistent running my ads. Then I had a family emergency that pulled me away from it again.

Throughout 2017-'18, I had a lot of stops and starts. Here's what I know: This store makes sales when I run ads and post on social media. It doesn't make sales when I do nothing. At this point, I'd much rather pass it on to someone who can stay consistent with their efforts.

What's involved in running this business

All the heavy lifting is done. Now you'd just need to create and run your ads on Facebook to test which products are the biggest winners. Also, post everyday to Instagram and Twitter. And email the list 2-3 times per week.

Other details about profit: These numbers are really not a very good reflection of the true value of this store, as there was a lot of time where I wasn't running ads or promoting the store in any way, yet throughout that time I still continued to pay for my Shopify subscription and apps. Moreover, for much of that time I was on the $79/month Shopify plan and also had several apps installed that I now realize were unnecessary. In hindsight, from the start I wish I'd been more diligent about keeping my costs down and instead put the money into advertising. If the new owner runs a lean business, at least until they start making consistent sales, they shouldn't have any problem making this store profitable.

    How to grow this business

    I would create a budget so that I knew how much money I needed to set aside for advertising and print on demand design costs. Then I would watch my numbers like a hawk so that in the future I could better forecast how much revenue I would bring in based on my ad spend. Overall, I would make sure I had a plan and then I'd stick to it!

    Skills to have

    The right person needs to stay focused and, most importantly, stay consistent with their efforts. They should have some basic knowledge of Facebook advertising and email marketing.
