Business Story

Why this business was started

FuzePlay teaches futuristic skills to kids through IoT learning experiences so they can build the world around them. Our technology platform enables high-tech toys for the non-tech by leveraging free, open source tools that are familiar to educators and common in industry. We FUZE online with offline play!

Co-Founder Kristy Muir was a mom busy busy raising three precocious daughters with the chief life goal is to empower them to own their freedom and inspire them to follow their curiosity. After an extensive search, the products Kristy brought into her home were either too dumbed-down or so high-level they were intimidating. There was nothing in between. Kristy turned to her brother Kyle who lives in product design, integrated product development, and PCB development and assembly. Together we founded FuzePlay.

Our simple pedagogy makes us different: 1) Verify & Configure Hardware, 2) Compile Code, 3) Play Games. FuzePlay gives kids as young as 6 the WOW experience of programming and controlling their physical world directly using text based script! This magical level of engagement gives FuzePlay a unique opportunity to accelerate the development of computer science related skills among the youngest in our community faster than anybody else in Education!!

Distribution relationships are established with Follett, NASCO, Mackin, and TechTerra. We have a lead list totalling 18,000 and have relationships at every major EdTech conference across the country. Over 400 units have been sold worldwide and 1600 units are shipped through a 3rd Party logistics provider. This is a cutting edge EdTech opportunity with a number of million dollar channel opportunities for the right buyer; generate recurring revenue through professional development, hosted online curriculum, electronic expansion packs, and platform extensions built using the same electronic brains we have already developed. FuzePlay owns multiple trademarks and currently has a patent in review for a ‘Programmable education device’.

The reason of selling this business

Life changes quick. I recently went through a family make over of sorts that has made startup life impossible. I’ve had to put a lot of things on pause and my brother has taken over the business. Kyle has been responsible for all product, electronics, firmware, and website development and maintenance. He is the main contact with our China factories and sourced each factory relationship himself regularly visiting China. Kyle has also been the point of contact with all distribution partners and has attended every major EdTech Tradeshow over the past couple years. He is committed to helping with any transition to ensure that all product development, manufacturing, and logistics are not interrupted.

What's involved in running this business

The business is turn-key with very little overhead. We received our first run of product last December. No additional product development is required and defect rate is <1%. Day-to-day efforts are focused on partner development, demos (schools, clubs, learning centers, government, business, clubs, Scouts, Boy’s & Girl’s Club, etc), curriculum development, podcasts, and speaking opportunities with refugee groups, coding camps, PTA groups, or others close to STEM education or special needs.

Kyle has maintained a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database with hundreds of online and brick and mortar top tier mass retail contacts for Best Buy USA, Best Buy Canada, Hammacher Schlemmer, Uncommon Goods, PolyGroup, Staples, and many others. As previously mentioned, our lead list for education contacts - Educators, Technology Coordinators, Technology Directors, Library Media Specialists - totals 18,000.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

The manufacturing and development is easy; I have those processes streamlined such that it will be easily help train and manage. All necessary relationships are maintained and in place.

Marketing, sales, content curation, social, and eCommerce experience will be the buyers biggest assets. We have not spent a dime on marketing and advertising, I don’t know that world well enough to spend the money. There is plenty of quality content to immediately implement a strong online and social marketing campaign to generate immediate sales.

STEM Education and coding remain hot topics. For additional growth I would continue to focus on education. Teacher and parent geared professional development sessions that show how to teach with technology are huge hits! After School programs LOVE demonstrations. Every after school program is a sales opportunity. You can call any school and offer a ‘tech hour’ for students or teachers. These opportunities frequently result in a sale!

Millions of dollars are spent regularly by Private and Charter Schools to build out Makerspaces. Not only are the schools themselves sales opportunities, but the Makerspace integrators are sales opportunities, each one reaches hundreds of schools!

There are many non-profit organizations that are charitable or educational in nature. Whether as a community program or for fundraising FuzePlay can be both!

FuzePlay is a great tax write off for businesses wanting to support community through a child friendly tech program. We have partnerships with various software companies that use FuzePlay as a lead generation tool in this manner.

Over the next couple months FuzePlay will be running workshops and hosting booth space at Utah Private Child Care Association and at Jump Start.
