Why this business was started

I started this business back in 2006 recognizing that furniture shopping in brick and mortar stores is very limiting in terms of selection. An online store can offer a much larger selection with low overhead. It also provides customers with an easier and time efficient way to research and comparison shop on larger ticket items that are expected to last many years. At it's peak, with less than 10 hours per week time investment I did over $450k in sales back in 2012 while on Network Solution's ecommerce platform. A time demanding IT career took attention away and the site was left untouched for years. I believe this site can be rejuvenated by a motivated entrepreneur willing to invest the time. Those sales were also done on a more limiting platform. I migrated the site to Shopify in 2018 rsince Network Solution's platform had fallen way behind the times but have only setup the basic bones of the site with a limited product selection. Zero effort or advertising has been put into the site since migrating to Shopify due to personal time constraints.

The reason of selling this business

A demanding career prevented me from ever dedicating myself fully to this site. In the past I used the side income for vacation and fun money without any desire to invest anything but minimal effort. It needs an active owner to take over.

What's involved in running this business

Currently the entire selection is drop ship so order fulfillment is quite easy and takes very little time. When an order comes in it is processed by sending an email to the rep at the supplier. The supplier will charge your credit card on file and ship direct to the customer.

Product updates and price changes are the main ongoing maintenance tasks. The Shopify platform makes all these tasks extremely easy. A marketing campaign on Facebook and Pinterest will be needed to drive traffic to the site. All traffic is from organic search or Pinterest posts, there has not been any paid advertising. There has been zero effort put into marketing which is reflected in the low sales. The new owner should first focus on expanding the product collection and then create marketing campaigns to increase traffic.

    In order to grow this business the product catalog should be expanded for both residential and commercial customers. Attending trade shows is an easy way to find new suppliers. Making contact by email or phone from the exhibitor lists available online is an easy way to start without investing in physically traveling to the shows. Additional material options for customers seeking both affordability and product longevity should also be a priority. Customers are looking for more maintenance free options like the high end recycled plastics that look like wood and last forever. Expanding the product catalog should be a consistent effort so the store has enough selection to capture as many sales as possible. Finding Etsy style artisans and smaller manufacturers who can personalize products with engravings or create custom sizes would be the next level to create a unique catalog. This curated approach will distinguish the catalog from what is available on Amazon and Wayfair. The artisan portfolio will also provide the marketing opportunities on social platforms to lure customers to visit.
