Why this business was started

I started GOLPHERS because I love the game of golf, and I wanted to be involved more in the industry. I did some initial market research in to the divot tool market and I quickly realized that most of the products offered were items that I would easily lose, or were cheap and of poor quality. Over the next few weeks I put some more thought into this market, and realized that I needed something that I wouldn't lose and would always have on me like my pocket knife. There was nothing on the market for what I wanted, so I set out to create it. I ultimately partnered with Professional Custom Knife maker Eric Ochs and we created the Ace design. I got initial feed back from friends, strangers, and family that was positive, so we did a production run on the Ace design. Shortly thereafter we created two price sensitive designs in the Wichita and Scottsdale.

I love my day job, and was recently promoted into and executive position that fills up most of my day. I unfortunately can’t sustain the amount of time I’m putting in to GOLPHERS and my day job.

Other details about profit: I partner with Touch of Modern and typically do a sell with them each quarter for around $1400. Eric has a 7% royalty on the Ace, Scottsdale, and Wichita that is paid out quarterly on the sold value of each item. His royalty is not applicable on any other items.

    How to grow this business

    The GOLPHERS brand is setup to go in to a number of directions, including tapping in to the apparel industry. I would focus on continued online growth, and then target retail sales with golf shops and club houses. Additionally, our products make for great groomsman and corporate gifts, so this would be a solid market to target as well.
