Why this business was started
Green Trout Outfitters started in 2013 on a whim. I needed a creative outlet while I was in college, so I bought my first sewing machine and a bunch of leash making supplies. From webbing to rope, dog coats & booties to t-shirts, I was trying it all. But I really enjoyed making rope leashes - there is something so soothing about using your hands to create something out of an assortment of materials. So, I decided to see what the world wide web thought of my creations.
At first it was a nice hobby that brought in a little cash on the side. But it turned into so much more. I was hooked on being my own boss, and determined to make it happen!
I started Green Trout Outfitters on a whim, without any real plan, and was able to make it my full-time job for almost 5 years. As the business has grown since its inception, I've been able to use Green Trout Outfitters as a platform for change, and for helping others in need. I have pledged to give back to the environment and continue making eco-conscious business decisions. Every leash sold by Green Trout Outfitters donates one native tree to a National Forest in need.
The reason of selling this business
I happened upon an opportunity to join the team of another small business, which entailed accepting a full-time position. I have honestly struggled with letting go of Green Trout Outfitters over the last few months (I've actually not accepted orders for most of 2021 so far as I settled into my new position). It's been my baby. I've nurtured it and watched it grow over the years, but I no longer have the time to continue promoting growth. I would rather see Green Trout Outfitters continue to grow in someone else's capable hands than simply disappear.
What's involved in running this business
I've been (basically) a one woman show since the beginning, and in control of every aspect of the business. From making each item by hand in my home, to fulfilling orders, monitoring and ordering inventory, finding suppliers, book keeping, marketing, social media... The list goes on and on. For nearly 5 years this was my full time job. When it was busy, I occasionally had help from friends and family. :)

SuppliersSince I have operated as a small business, I often bought regularly in small quantities. In order to maintain the same level of quality, I would provide a list of the suppliers I buy from regularly. With most, there are larger "wholesale" or bulk discounts that could be taken advantage of to drive material costs down.
How to grow this business
My 5 year growth plan is currently to take advantage of wholesale. It's a segment of the business that is currently growing, so I believe that it could be a great way to expand. Wholesale clients order in bulk, so this also helps keep labor costs lower.
One product that has taken off recently is the Adventure/Expedition Pack. Currently, I make these all by hand. But they could easily be manufactured to increase the margins.
Social media also offers a lot of untapped potential. Green Trout Outfitters already has a following built up on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest, but I personally haven't had time to keep up with changing trends or take advantage of opportunities for growth there. Instagram really helped me build my business many years ago, and I believe that it has the ability to continue on that path today and in the next 5 years through all social media outlets.
Skills to have
If the buyer intends to continue with creating each item by hand, then understanding how to work with rope is a must. Techniques like splicing 3-strand rope, and sailmaker's whipping are required skills. I am willing to work with the buyer and teach what I can. The buyer should also understand dying techniques using fiber reactive powder dyes.
Sewing and general knowledge of sewing construction is also a skill that may come in handy.
