Why this business was started
Hattie Rex was born in 2007 when I was a new mom to a yellow lab puppy named Pablo. Like most new moms, I wanted Pablo to have the very best of everything. Dissatisfied with the plastic fire hydrant dog id tags that were available on the market, I set out to make my own and began selling them online. Later, I began bringing on the work of other local and regional artists. With new technology, I'm now able to offer the work of an unlimited number of artists without having to physically carry their inventory. I'm passionate about connecting buyers with the artists who make their gifts, supporting the handmade movement, and creating community.
The reason of selling this business
My reasons for selling the business are two-fold. One, I've started a consulting business helping other small business owners move to or manage the Shopify platform. Two, I'm the mother of a two-year old with another on the way. I'd like to hand it over to a new, passionate owner who is excited for the next chapter of Hattie Rex so that I can focus on consulting and being the mother of two young children.
What's involved in running this business
Researching new products and artists, reaching out to new artists to invite them to sell on Hattie Rex, responding to artists' requests to sell on Hattie Rex, onboarding new artists, promoting artists and their work on social media and through email marketing, corresponding with our email marketing team to send out campaigns, troubleshooting dropship errors, ensuring dropship artists are paid through our automatic payment system, website administration. For resale items (items you keep on hand physically), photographing the products, writing descriptions and listing online, fulfilling and shipping orders.

How to grow this business
Online, I'd focus on expanding our reach through increased email marketing, upping our presence on Amazon handmade, and adding the Walmart sales channels. I'd also bring micro-influencers on board and hire a team to identify and onboard new artistic talent for our dropshipped products.
Skills to have
An interest in handmade products would be helpful, as well as some comfort with Shopify websites. We use Jetti to connect our dropship vendors, but this could easily be switched to Duoplane or another platform. All technical components could also be outsourced. I currently have a VA who would likely stay on board to continue technical tasks and general website administration.
