Why this business was started

Hi! We are Robert, Melissa, Jacquie and Mike, a young family of four living in sunny Southern California. We established this business in January 2014 under “Subsidy Shades” as a fundraiser for our family of three (at the time) to adopt a second child through the sale of our goods. Having adopted our daughter Jacqueline 10 months prior, we knew if we wanted to adopt another child, it would take some creativity. Thankfully, our business grew and we were able to adopt our second child, 11 months after we launched. Yay! Throughout the years we have been able to give back to numerous organizations tied to children services.

Today, Hide + Seek playful children eyewear focuses on creating joy in childhoods throughout the world. Our sunglasses are meant to bring fun in what can be a somewhat serious world. We believe when we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best hiding in ourselves.

The reason of selling this business

This business has been a very personal venture. It has generated funds to help my husband and I adopt our child and then support our family and those we love. As my children are growing older I find myself being pulled to be more present in their lives and less distracted by running this business. It’s been a very difficult decision to make but I feel strongly that I need to be there for my kids.

What's involved in running this business

This is a social media based business. Keeping those channels fresh with content is my top priority. Forming strong relationships with other businesses for giveaways and influencers for marketing is key. Researching product, creating product through my manufacture contacts. Fulfilling orders, product and lifestyle photography, creating emails and ad campaigns.

    How to grow this business

    If I were not selling I would grow the business over the next five years through targeted Influencer marketing. Including; discounted or free product in return of social posts and content. As well as specific giveaways and collaborations with other brands. I would also have consistent drops of new styles and offer incentives such as a reward point system to my customers to motivate social media follows and customer referrals.

    Skills to have

    An eye for emerging trends in the children fashion industry. This is a fun business and almost all aspects can be outsourced or learned. Be transparent and let the customers get to know you!
