Why this business was started

I started this business in 2000. The full story is in my ABOUT section on the site, but basically it's just a cool idea and no one in the world was (or is) doing it. I have a love of graphic arts, astronomy, e-commerce and prefer to be self-employed, so brought all that together with Indigo.

The reason of selling this business

I am now in my late 60s. Time to go sailing! I don't really need the money at this point (Indigo has provide a nice living) and have only worked these last few years (part time) because I enjoyed it. Covid is part of the formula too insofar that it presents/forces considerations about the value of time. I am inclined to just shut it down but I have so many customers that still want the [REDACTED] there's that aspect as well.

What's involved in running this business

A lot of customer communication. It's a high touch business. A lot of time looking for images. A lot of time creating illustrations in Photoshop. Large format printing. Framing. Shipping.

Other details about profit: The given numbers are not current. I have only been working part time for the last several years. When I was working full time I made between 30 and 50 K per year. It's not a bomb but it's very pleasant work and could easily scale up for some one who is more focused on the "business." For me, it was always about making the product as good as I could make it, and that's sometimes counter to profits. I do have the advantage of existing on-going sales not dependent on advertising or marketing. These are returning customers I have developed over the past 20 years. So you would have sales and revenue right out of the gate.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

    Indigo Night has succeeded with no marketing to speak of. I never made the transition from AdWords to social media. It's a natural for those newer platforms, for sure. Facebook and Instagram. So the obvious answer is a presence and engagement on those platforms. There are a couple of other companies out there doing "star map" products (but very different from Indigo), and doing quite well it appears, because of their social media marketing. Their products lacks charm and authority but they have the marketing down, I'll give them that.

    Skills to have

    OK. Here's the deal. This is not a push-button business. It requires actual work! The new owner should be inclined toward astronomy; have at least intermediate Photoshop skills, and be able to write well. I can teach you how to make the graphic but you'll need to have some intrinsic interest and skills in those areas.
