Why this business was started

We have a dog and a cat and love the niche. Pet supplies are a year round industry and people like to spoil their pets. So it felt like it was something we loved in a good industry. Some businesses have cyclical and seasonal sales, or are fad industries. Being in the pet niche really allows us to grow a brand and get consistent year long sales. Being an entrepreneur and business owner really appealed to me and Shopify and Dropshipping is one of the easiest ways to get started.

The reason of selling this business

I work full time and every skill with owning a business is new to me. I feel like the skills I don't have are the ones that would likely be most beneficial to the business, which mainly focus around building the social media aspect. I think the store looks really great, we have some strong products that are hard to find elsewhere, proven success with a good conversion rate, and good relationships with a lot of our suppliers. I would like to see this business in the hands of someone who can really help take it to the next level.

What's involved in running this business

Running ads, filling orders, accounting, customer service, product research, supplier vetting, ad and product description writing. It's a full business that you don't have to invest a huge sum in upfront. When a customer places an order with you, you place an order with your supplier and they ship directly to the customer. (no big inventory costs). You'll need to create ads, learn how to find out which ones are performing the best, set prices, run sales and promotions. It's an exciting way to finally have your own business.

A good advertiser could likely significantly increase their profit margin. I was inefficient with my advertising and ended up spending money on bad ads which significantly reduced my profit margin. Someone who has more time to focus on monitoring and improving their ads campaigns could keep a lot more of the profit.

    How to grow this business

    The pet niche is always huge. Standing apart from competition is important so focusing on quality creatives (ads) and improving who and when they are delivered to is very important. The store gets a lot of positive feedback and often averages over a 3% conversion rate, so focusing on customer service, growing the social media presence, and building a reputation would be a huge growth feature. I am not super strong with social media, but building a brand on Facebook (page will be included in this sale), Instagram, TikTok, etc., has huge potential. The value of being able to build a community around this brand is that you get loyal customers who buy from your brand without the advertising costs. If you are a strong social media type, you could really build this community into a revenue stream.

    Skills to have

    This is a standard dropshipping model. Filling orders with Oberlo is easy. Some advertising knowledge of Facebook, TikTok, Instagram would be beneficial, but can easily be learned. If you have video editing skills, you could really excel. Customer service is also really important. I've built up a really good relationship with a lot of my customers and suppliers because of proactive and top notch customer service. These people have routinely recommended this store to friends and we've been starting to see consistent repeat business (which is a great sign). This is a business though, and part of the fun is getting to learn these skills, learning to outsource what you're not good at, and focusing on growing the brand.
