Why this business was started

I decided to start Just Asian Things because I wanted to create a source of income which allowed me to work for myself and work from anywhere. I also wanted experience running my own retail business on shopify. Therefore, I started Just Asian Things using the dropshipping model.

Being Asian myself and having an interest in cute toys/Asian popular culture I designed the brand to fit around that theme. Additionally, I have seen many Facebook ad's and other dropshipping stores selling the Bubble Tea plushies which proved to be a hot product. I also had skills in photography and website design which allowed me to make the website and branding stand out compared to other dropshipping stores selling the same product.

The reason of selling this business

I am currently studying Engineering and will be returning to my degree very soon so I will have less time to continue working on this business. I also wish to pursue other businesses and am looking for an exit for Just Asian Things.

Just Asian Thing still has plenty of potential and will be best suited for someone who is very good at TikTok and content creation as the majority of the sales/traffic was a result of creating viral videos on TikTok and organic traffic through Instagram.

What's involved in running this business

In the current dropshipping model, fulfilling orders is fairly straight forward and not too time consuming. The business only uses two suppliers. One for the plushies/toys and one for the print on demand apparel.

The print on demand apparel is currently using OGO Print on Demand which is a printing company based in Melbourne, Australia. They have their own shopify app which is fully automated so not much work is required to fulfill apparel orders. Besides creating new designs/uploading designs that you have had created for new apparel.

The second supplier is the plushie/toys supplier based in China. The supplier has a store on Alibaba on which they have many ready to ship products including the Bubble Tea plushies which is our best seller. We communicate with the supplier over WeChat, I will provide the WeChat contact and introduce the new owner to the supplier. The supplier works with many dropshipping stores so they are well equipped to deal with dropshipping orders. Currently, the process to fulfill orders with this supplier is done by excel spreadsheet. I have found that using google sheets is the best and safest way to fulfill the orders. The process is as follows.

  1. Export the orders from the Shopify orders list.

  2. Copy the order information (Name, Shipping address, phone number, order items etc.) into the template provided by the supplier.

  3. Use Bing Maps/Google Maps to verify any addresses which look incorrect or questionable. Also check that zip codes are correct and that the apartment number has been correctly added to the address line. This step is the most time consuming part. If you are unsure about addresses it is best to check it on Bing Maps first and if you cannot find the address or you are not sure, contact the customer to confirm the address. It is easier to refund the order if the address looks incorrect before sending it rather than shipping it with an incorrect address and having a package bounce back.

  4. The supplier uses different product names for their products compared to what they are called in the shopify store. So in this step you need to read the products in the order and re-write them in the correct terms that the supplier will understand. E.g. Shopify Product Name: 124cm Smiley Bubble Tea Plushie -> Supplier Name: 241 round eyes Note: This step could be automated with spreadsheet formulas.

  5. Double check that all the quantities and products are written correctly for each order.

  6. Export the spreadsheet as an Excel file and send to Supplier. Make sure the file is named correctly which includes the range of orders which are in this batch. I usually try to do a batch of orders every 2 days or once a day depending on how many orders are to be fulfilled.

  7. After 1-2 days the supplier will return another spreadsheet with tracking numbers. Download this spreadsheet and copy the tracking numbers and order numbers into a another spreadsheet called "import" which will be the spreadsheet you upload to the bulk fulfillment app.

  8. Upload the import spreadsheet into the bulk fulfillment app which automatically fulfills each order and sends a shipped notification to the customer.

That is the entire process for fulfilling the orders broken down into 8 steps. I will provide all of the previous spreadsheets from old batches so the new owner can refer to them and follow this process and potentially improve upon it. There are many ways this process could be improved/automated.

In terms of advertising/marketing the majority of the marketing is done through organic marketing using TikTok and Instagram. Which also involves working with influencers. Finding new influencers to send products to in exchange for a video is time consuming but will achieve good results and good ROI. As long as the influencer is the right fit in terms of audience and potential reach. TikTok is the most effective form of organic advertising we have found. Especially because we had two videos which cost us basically nothing to upload and create go viral allowing us to reach almost $10k in sales in one month. Video creation for TikTok doesn't have to be production quality or extremely edited. Simple short <15 second videos work best. As long as you are putting out videos consistently, at least once a day.

Other details about profit: Our store is currently setup in AUD so some conversions had to be made for this listing in USD. The large spike in sales made in September 2020 is a result of two of our TikTok videos going viral which brought alot of followers and traffic to our store resulting in our best month of sales.

    • Personal support after sale

      I can provide general support for the business up to 2 weeks after the sale has been made. I won't be available 24/7 but will answer text messages usually in less than 30min if not at least in 24 hours. After 2 weeks from the sale date I can no longer provide any general support. However I will handle any future chargebacks or refunds for orders made before the transfer of the stores ownership. Even after the 2 weeks of general support. The new owner may contact me to deal with these refunds/chargebacks.

    How to grow this business

    This store has large potential to become a brilliant money maker, but will require work to build the brand and improve the supply chain. Being a dropshipping store, the biggest problem is shipping times and sometimes slow communication with the suppler leading to long product fulfillment times. The new owner should aim to phase out the dropshipping model and transistion to a fulfillment center with stock and faster shipping options, such as DHL.

    Furthermore, the online presence of the store can be developed further through TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms. The store already has a decent following of 30K+ followers on TikTok, but this can be grown further with more consistent creation of content. I would employ or find someone to create consistent content for TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. You do not necessarily need to run paid advertisements as I have found that these types of products do not do so well using paid Facebook ads. Organic traffic and marketing would be the best way to go.

    Overall, improving the fulfillment time/supply chain and growing the online marketing would be my strategy to growing the store further.

    Skills to have

    The new owner should be able to use google sheets/excel and be able to communicate with Chinese suppliers over WeChat in English. Furthermore, what makes Just Asian Things stand out compared to other dropshipping stores is the high quality product images and marketing photos. The new owner should either have some skill in photography or know someone who can do that for them.

    Otherwise, the products are fairly simple and there is not much technical knowledge required to sell them.
