Why this business was started
Even before Covid, I always visualized the perfect job as being one that could be done remotely, from anywhere, at any time, and without any huge outlay for inventory. Since its humble beginnings, the goal was always to generate an extra income, day or night, doing something positive and fulfilling, without costing a fortune.
With a steep learning curve, the business started out using the Dropship model and did extremely well in the pet niche with a single product that achieved over US$10k in sales in a single month (344 orders with approx US$4k in profit). Unfortunately, due to supplier transparency issues in China, this product had to be pulled from the store, followed by weeks of customer service follow-up. As a result, I transitioned across to the Print On Demand model, which had a more transparent process of supply chains, production and fulfilment, better customer service, as well as allowing me to sell my own designs that were unique, customized, and with a perceived higher value than the over-saturated, generic goods sourced from popular dropship supply channels.
Since switching to POD, the business has tested various niches and audiences, and has rebranded a few times, eventually settling back into the extremely popular and lucrative Pet (Dog) niche, but this time with a new approach – “Personalization” (where the customer adds a photo of their pet, a name and some text).
The bond between humans and their pets is timeless and evergreen. People will spend far more on their pets, than almost any other interest. Whilst the pet niche may seem saturated in todays market, what can make one business stand out in a crowd, is allowing customers to personalize an everyday product into something that will forever remind them of their beloved pet. It's a Game Changer!
Another important consideration, especially with the impact covid has had on global shipping, is where to source products from. Not wanting customers to be impacted by shipping delays from China, I decided to only use companies located in the US, that can print and ship quickly to a US target audience, within a matter of days, not weeks.
The reason of selling this business
Covid has had a huge impact on the world, and having been faced with my own personal challenges over the last few years, I have found it increasingly difficult to find the time to properly grow the business. Lots of hard work has been put into this business and I have confidence that it can become a trusted brand in the "Personalized Product" arena. Ideally, someone with the same vision and passion will recognize the opportunity available and be able to take it to the next level.
What's involved in running this business
All of the heavy lifting has already been done, so all you need to do to get started is allocate a few hours a week to: * create and run ads to your target audience * create regular social media posts * handle customer enquiries * process orders as they come in
By processing orders, I mean that once you get the hang of the easy, step-by-step process involved in creating a custom design in Photoshop (instructions will be provided), you will be able to pump out orders very quickly.
After a customer places an order and pays for it, you will create a design for them, and then send a proof within 48hrs for their approval (they are entitled to 1 revision only) after which you will send the order to the printers. They will then create and fulfill the order, shipping it within days, directly to the customer with a tracking id. They will deduct your payment from the account that you have already received funds from the customer - Voila, you keep the profits! If you find you have more orders than you can personally create designs for each day, then hooray, what a high-quality problem to have! All you need to do is outsource the extra work (instructions provided on how to do this) and pay them out of the profit from each order.
The amount of time to create each design has already been factored into the store pricing, but if you feel you need to increase the prices, go for it! You set the profit margins! If you hit the heart-strings just right, people will be more than happy to pay premium prices to get something custom-made, especially for them, that will be a treasured keepsake of their pets.

Skills to have
Experience with Photoshop, Content Creation and Marketing are definitely an asset but you can learn on the job too!
For example, you don't have to be an expert at Photoshop (I wasn't) but with some basic training (provided) you will be able to follow simple how-to steps to create your designs and edit them if needed. Please note, Photoshop is not included in the sale so you will need to pay a monthly subscription for this (around US$20.99/mo), as well as a one-time only fee (around US$10-15) for a Photoshop "Action" that is used to create the particular design effects), and another tool to optimize poor quality photos from customers prior to creating your designs.
Social Media Marketing - this is the area most needing attention, so if you already have experience you can hit the ground running. If you are a newbie, then there are some awesome short courses available on Udemy.com to get you started Please Note: whilst this business has not actively been running FB Ads for some time, you will, at some point, need to spend money on Advertising to promote products and reach your audience. How much you spend on ads is up to you, but allowing $100 per month for FB Ads, for example, will help to avoid bill shock. Once you get sales, you can scale up your marketing budget.
Content Creation - ideally you will have a creative flair and can create your own amazing images, videos and descriptions, but an extensive library of already created assets will be provided after sale to get you started. Email Marketing - this area of marketing has not been utilized for some time, so an email list is not included. Email marketing offers even more opportunities if you learn how to incorporate it into the business
Shopify Apps - while not included in the sale, recommendations can definitely provided after sale, along with some basic training on how to use them
Facebook Page and Instagram - these have already been created for you, and just need some TLC to get them growing. With a modest 172 FB followers and 16 Instagram followers, you can check out the type of posts already there, and pick up where I left off. Being "present" and connecting with your audience is "key" to growing your business so scheduling regular content should be a weekly task.
Youtube Channel - this has already been created for you and so far has only been used to host video content. There is great potential to use the Youtube channel for so much more!
