Little Adventurer

Appears in Food and drink , Business and Franchises under $5,000, Canada, Ontario, Mississauga, Medium Business, Inventory

General description

Little Adventurer was started in my basement as a hobby and side job for my husband and I when I was on extended Maternity leave with two young children in August 2016. After months of gathering products to sell and taking our own photos, we officially opened our store on December 2, 2016.

Financials and traffic

When we had time to advertise lightly, the average orders per month were about 10-15. We have tapered our efforts on our store due to the demands of our two young kids so currently our average is 2-5 orders per month. Each product has it’s own margin, lunch containers were about 20-30% where the smaller items had a greater margin of up to 60%. In order to appeal to customers as we were a new store and wanted to be competitive, we offered free shipping on small orders so that took away from profiting. If we offered free shipping on orders over $150 only, we’d actually make some profit.

Q & A

Why should someone buy this store?

Bento lunches are increasing in popularity and people are looking for different bento accessories to make lunch and meal times fun, enticing, and adorable. Anything to help encourage their children to eat more while being reminded that their parents/guardians love them and miss them while they’re away. Our store has a big variety of items to keep the bento enthusiasts happy.

How can the future owner improve the business?

The future owner can take time to advertise the business better. I started an emailing list but never got around to emailing customers for all the upcoming sales or events. I’d also suggest for the future owner to get in contact with big brands such as YumBox and PlanetBox and try to carry those products.

What work have you put into the store?

We have taken most product photos ourselves and created descriptions of each item for over 94 items. We created a Facebook group with over 1200 members, we have 213 follows on our Facebook business page, and over 75 followers on Instagram.

How many hours does it take to run this business per week?
