Why this business was started

I started Makai Bracelets in December of 2017 when I was a senior in high school. At the time, I made milkshakes at Steak 'n Shake and despised my job; I wanted out badly. I wanted to create a business that did not require much overhead cost and had high growth potential, and through some brainstorming, Makai was born. The initial and current business model involves direct messaging potential customers asking them to be representatives for the brand. In exchange for being a representative, they receive 50% off an order (priced to ensure solid profit margin) and exposure on the Makai Instagram. The business model was an instant success, and I made roughly $500 a week for most of 2018, putting in under 20 hours a week of work. I went off to college during the fall of 2018 and had a hard time keeping up with the business. As a result, sales suffered. Every time I came home on break, however, sales immediately climbed back up to that $500/week number as I put more effort into managing the business. Eventually I transitioned the company from a drop-shipping model to a white-labeling model as customers began to dislike the extensive shipping time. I currently keep inventory at home and ship via USPS across the United States. My mother has been managing the business over the last 6 months due to my lack of time.

Unfortunately, neither myself or my mother have the time to run Makai. I am preparing for a career in computer science and my mother has a full time job. Makai is the perfect business for anyone with a little extra time on their hands looking to make quick money!

What's involved in running this business

Makai exists on a relatively simple business model. Customers are acquired via direct messaging on Instagram through the following steps: 1.) Message the customer with an initial offer to be a representative for Makai 2.) Explain the perks of being a representative (easy to get creative with this, some perks I offered were 50% off orders, exposure on the Makai Instagram, etc.) 3.) Send a link to the Makai website and ask the potential customer to browse for items 4.) Once the customer has found items they like, send them a personalized discount code created through Shopify 5.) Wait for them to place their order!

    How to grow this business

    Makai has a lot of room to grow over the next 5 years. It exists within a relatively untapped industry and the products have proven successful in terms of attractiveness to customers and durability. I have always chosen the route of direct messaging prospective customers because it is entirely free, however I believe proper use of Facebook Advertising would allow sales to sky-rocket. I advise the future owner of Makai to leverage Facebook/Google ads, Makai's existing email list of over 2,500 subscribers, and Makai's 10.2K follower Instagram presence to achieve Makai's greatest sales potential.

    One interesting idea that I never implemented involves hiring 1-2 individuals to maintain Instagram direct messages, essentially handling all sales-work. Their pay would cut into profit margin but would translate Makai into an entirely passive income.

    Skills to have

    The future owner of Makai Bracelets should have knowledge of Instagram and Facebook advertising. However, the owner need not be proficient in either. The future owner must be prepared to invest time into maintaining direct message conversations with potential customers via Instagram, as that is how revenue is generated under the current business model.
