Why this business was started

I decided to start the business as a side hustle, as I love fashion and eCommerce. This aesthetic / grunge / harajuku fashion niche is a fantastic one with a devoted market of 15-30 year olds, and an audience that is very easy to engage with. Drop-shipping with Shopify is a great way to get into eCommerce for the newcomer, although I had experience already on another eCommerce platform.

The reason of selling this business

I am reluctantly selling this store because I have a rapidly growing coaching business which is demanding all of my time. I have to invest my time in creating courses, training and workshops, therefore I cannot find the hours in the day to run this store effectively. It's a shame as I love this brand and it has a lot of potential to grow. Between April and July 2019 it was very quiet due to a lack of advertising and social media activity for the store. However, the store sales and revenue have dramatically increased since September 2019, as I focused on the store growth much more. With the right amount of consistent attention and focus, this store can be much more successful every single month. It already has very high traffic and ranks highly on Google in organic searches as I invested in good SEO in July 2019.

I would say you need to invest 2-3 hours a day to manage / process orders, email contact with customers, social media time (posting, DMs, engagement), researching and importing new items (though not necessarily every day) and checking product and shipping updates within Oberlo.

    How to grow this business

    To grow this store I would definitely invest more time in delivering great email campaigns as the mailing list is sizeable, and expand the Influencer relationships on Instagram, as this has worked really well so far. I would also leverage Pinterest a lot more as this will open up another FREE traffic source. There are some very clear best sellers in the store, and I would consider getting a few of these items in as physical stock, and offer faster domestic shipping rates to increase customer satisfaction. Also work on items that can be cross-sold during the checkout process. I also believe that there is great potential to grow the Mercury Girl brand and develop a unique clothing range in the future. I have just recently had the logo updated and linked a UK based Print on Demand supplier to the store, and created mock-ups of t-shirt / hoodie "merch" with the new Mercury Girl logo. I have not used Facebook Ads much at all, as the target audience is not generally on Facebook! Instagram has been by far a more attractive platform to attract fans and customers.

    Skills to have

    For the right person, the digital skills needed to run this store can be learned, but it helps greatly to have a good customer service ethic, a willingness to build relationships with social media micro-influencers, and an ability to not just see the sales as merely transactions. You can learn the essentials of harajuku / aesthetic fashion very quickly. It's a thriving niche of 16-30 year olds and you can produce some great content for it.
