Why this business was started

In 2016, sequin pillows were becoming popular among interior designers and they were marketed mainly to adults. We saw an opportunity to create 'kids sequin pillows' with themes like mermaids; dinosaurs; superheroes, etc.

Our first pillow - IMAGINE Mermaid Pillow - generated $500,000+ in sales in it's first few weeks.

What's involved in running the business depends largely on what areas of the business the new owner(s) want to manage day-to-day and what areas they want to outsource.

We've kept everything 'in-house' at different points in the business, and we've outsourced literally everything (except customer service) at other points.

In 2019, we kept everything in-house because we want to maximize profitability and have total control over the production and fulfillment. In 2020, we plan to outsource everything (if we don't sell the business) because we'd like to focus more on our other businesses.

Other details about profit: The numbers I've listed under 'Profit' are highly variable & seasonal. We make 80%+ of revenue/profit in Q4. For example, in 2017/2018, we chose to scale as fast & big as we could - spending $30+ to acquire the customer ($80 AOV) - in order to scale to ~12M in revenue. In 2019, we chose to focus on profitability instead of scale. We brought everything in house; we reduced our staff to (1) part-time employee & (2) virtual assistants & reduced our agency contractors from (3) to (0). As a result, our revenue is is much lower than last year but our profitability will be about the same or higher.

    In late 2019, we added a non-sequin pillow (a "pocket pillow") and it was well-received among our existing customers (about 200 orders). We've also begun marketing B2B and have received bulk orders from companies including Netflix and Amazon.

    It depends on how much or little of the production/fulfillment the new owners would like to handle 'in house' but the knowledge/skills required are easily transferable.
