Why this business was started

We started the business from identifying a painpoint first hand which is that postpartum physical and mental experiences, rest and recovery remain very mysterious, misunderstood and even stigmatized in Canada. Further, purchasing items to assemble a postpartum care kit for friends for their baby showers (the top reason people buy) is incredibly onerous and expensive. Products are found across multiple stores and in undesirable quantities for example. With Mom Friends we asked moms what they needed, we sourced it (locally where possible), assembled and shipped it. We fixed the problems of convenience and product 'fit' for people looking to gift postpartum care.

The reason of selling this business

We always said we would be in it for 5 years. Always have an exit startegy :) We have moved on from being new parents ourselves and would like to focus on the next stage of our entrepreneurial journeys.

    How to grow this business

    We never got paid ads right, so all of our sales (just under 20K CDN in 2020) are from word of mouth and minimal social media presence/direct email marketing and SEO effort. If we were sticking with it we would explore paid ads more (and have gotten this advice from other experts). We would also invest more time into SEO and continue to strategically grow direct email marketing (we only do a couple of sales per year with ebalsts).

    It is a great investment because our sales and margins have consistently grown every year. Our products are about care and conenction so they have been especially popular between friends and family during the pandemic. We have very loyal customers, with a high return customer rate and are proud to say we have never received a negative review.

    Our market research is also extensive, pointing us in the right direction on product development and sourcing and have helped us to build a community around what we're offering and the message behind the mission.

    The new owner or owners should be savvy and dedicated marketers. That will be the best skill to propel this shop forward.
