General description

MONT Apparel is focused on outdoor apparel for the explorer and nature lover. Our goal is to bring the outdoors closer to everyday life through modern, nature inspired clothing. We believe in exploring the world around us, and making the most of adventurous, healthy lifestyles. This company was started as a side project and quickly grew into a business that many Vermont locals love. We ship designs through print-on-demand company Printful, who ships everything in MONT branded boxes, so we never have to work with physical product. Many of our designs are a well-loved favorite, as we feature hand drawn designs from a very talented contract artist who has close connections to our brand and continues to give artistic input even when he is not actively designing for us. After working with this artist, the brand started seeing increased growth, and many people started buying clothing from me face-to-face on my college campus. After this point, my goal was to start selling clothing at small physical markets on college campuses, but I did not have the resources to break into that market - although there was a huge interest. After going to college and putting my resources in other ventures, I have found myself dwindling away from the MONT Apparel project which many friends and strangers see potential in. People constantly ask me for new designs, but I no longer have the time nor the resources to continue supplying this company with what it needs to grow. All of the sales made thus far have mainly been through word-of-mouth and personal connections. People see potential in this store, but I cannot supply the time and personal investment that this store needs to grow, that is why I would like to pass it along to someone else.

Why should someone buy this store?

There is huge interest in what my store is selling, especially on college campuses in areas like Vermont which have a large focus on nature and the environment. People (especially college kids) enjoy repping a brand whose roots are based in the earth, but I can no longer pursue this business venture since I now have new responsibilities in college. The only reason that I would walk away from this project is because I no longer have the time to run it on my own. During the time that I was putting my utmost effort into the store I was getting back a large return in my investment - this went on for a short while before I could no longer dedicate that amount of time towards it. The more time I put in to showing people what this brand has to offer, the more I got out of it - so if you are serious about running this store you could certainly reach a market of people interested in the earth, and make some real sales.

How can the future owner improve the business?

This store can be improved by dedicating better marketing, modeling, and styles to the current catalog. My customers want to see regular releases, professional product photos, and better emails, ads, and promotional content from my brand. Given the right amount of time dedicated to doing this, the store could really grow to a new level, and I know that based on personal experience and the return that I got out of dedicating my full attention for a short while.

What work have you put into the store?

This brand has really worked its way up from the bottom. I started selling t-shirt designs on sites like Teespring and Redbubble, and then realized that there was a large enough interest in my products that I should start my own store. After launching on Shopify, the store really took off and I started looking for artists - I found one who has become a professional contractor for the brand and has made a huge difference in the quality of our products. The more work I put into the brand, the more I got out of it, and at one point I was dedicating dozens of hours for weeks on end to complete the most profitable month on record.

Seller‘s Advice

How to grow this business

If I were to continue working on this business myself, I would focus on making a large increase in advertising to college kids at universities focused on the environment, as they have been my main buyers. I would also release new products on a monthly basis and get a few more artists working with me, as the first artist has proven to be an amazing investment and his work has really made the company grow. I would also try to sell physical goods on college campuses since students really like what I have to offer so far.

Skills to have

Strong marketing skills would really help you bring the company further, as well as a strong ability to get professional contracts going with artists. That is pretty much all the special experience you would need - the rest is just like any other business really!
