Business Story

Why this business was started

As an amateur web designer I had used Wordpress previously and wanted to learn the Shopify platform. There's no better way than to just dive in and learn!

The reason of selling this business

Putting Much Gay together has been a blast and I've built the foundation of a great business with a ton of potential. However other projects and full-time commitments mean that I'm not able to dedicate the time to taking the business to the next level.

The hard part has been done for you - building the site. If you're looking for an investment in which you can concentrate 100% on building a business - this is it.

What's involved in running this business

The site has been built out and functions well (if I do say so myself!) Currently updating social media and building presence has been my focus. There is a ton of potential for marketing and growth and this is definitely worth exploring.

Order processing is easy - I have set up Printful to not automatically fulfil orders so that they can be approved so there are a few extra clicks here but it is very easy to fulfil orders. Printful offers a free area on the packaging for custom messaging so I've been sending a 20% off code to generate repeat customers (and whichever postmen glance at it!)

Main source of traffic generation has been the blog - I've written a few top ten guides to gay bars around the world - a lot of them have huge followings and them sharing the content has generated a lot of traffic. Banners within the content has directed visitors to products. Social has been a great source of traffic too, and I've used some great discounts to keep a high rate of recovered abandoned carts (free shipping).

There is a lot of competition in the gay apparel/accessories space so doing your research to ensure that you're not copying anyone else out there is essential. However, if you're just looking to design t-shirts in a great niche - or even if you're looking to build the gay hotspot of shopping on the internet, Much Gay is the perfect foundation!

I have folders full of art assets, and am happy to transfer this over to you in whatever way is easiest for you (e.g. dropbox, google drive). This includes t-shirt raw psd files, all banners, adverts that have been used etc and their raw psd equivalent.
    • Personal support after sale

I will be available for two weeks post-transfer for technical questions, webex etc. After this if you have ad-hoc queries I'd be more than happy to help but wouldn't be able to give detailed technical advice (happy to work out the definition of this with you pre- or post-transfer).

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

Gay men spend billions on fashion every year (trust me, there are numerous sources out there confirming this!) As a result there are huge opportunities with a website like Much Gay. Whilst there are already players in this space, very few are competitive on price, so there is definitely a gap for a price disruptor to come into the market.

The foundations of a fun, fantastic business are there, and Much Gay now needs someone who can take it to the next level. The store focuses on t-shirts and other apparel currently and has an integration with Printful. The current apparel designs will be transferred over to you as part of the sale and you will own them going forward!

There is also an integration with Oberlo set up - I explored this and experimented with some products but after doing some research and a customer contacting us I had concerns around authenticity. If you have the time to vet the products you can source some fantastic stuff from Oberlo.

    Skills to have

The site's theme was not purchased from the Shopify theme store but rather on Theme Forest. The license is a lifetime license and you will receive lifetime updates. There is a dedicated support team who run a ticket system for issues (have only asked them for advice on two and I'm new to Shopify!)

The configuration options for the theme are fairly self-explanatory but you will need to spend some time exploring the options as they are extensive. I'm happy to run a session with you to show you the configuration options as part of the transfer. Alternatively - replace the theme with your own!

Shopify uses a proprietary coding language called Liquid which is a mix between HTML and their own protocols - it's easy to pick up but some knowledge of HTML would be useful. Again, happy to run a session on this but I'm not an expert, putting the site together has involved some trial and error!

There are some great resources on the internet if you haven't come across HTML before - I've used these extensively so don't let this put you off.

For product images, I use Photoshop and GIMP (free version). Some knowledge of image manipulation would be useful in order to set up product images/banners etc but this isn't essential - the theme's banner builder is very powerful.

I am an amateur website designer and gay fashion enthusiast! Marrying the two with Much Gay has been a blast, however I have other projects as well as full-time work commitments which mean I would like to sell this project on to someone who has the time to nurture it into the great business it can be!

Exchange is the largest and fastest-growing marketplace for Shopify e-commerce stores

    Verified listing data

The revenue and traffic data that you see on each listing is pulled directly from its Shopify account. This means that the data has been verified. Exchange reviews and monitors listings for thorough and accurate information.

    Secure messaging platform

You will be able to communicate with sellers via a secure messaging platform. After you log in and request information from a listing, sellers are notified and have the ability to respond. When you are ready, you can make an offer.

    Encrypted payment capture

Exchange and Escrow.com have partnered together to provide you with safe transactions that have bank encryption, making sure that payment is securely captured. Escrow.com ensures that its users pass verification checks before transactions can proceed.

Take time to inspect the business

Once you submit payment to Escrow.com and the payment has been secured, the funds are held until you confirm that all assets received are as negotiated. You can use the inspection period to ask the seller any extra questions about the business.

    Safe store transfer

When the transaction is finalized, the dedicated migration team at Exchange will begin the process of making you the new owner of the store. Buyers and sellers will be notified via an email from the Exchange team once store transfers have been completed.
