General description

Norsebox is the premier Nordic design subscription box.

I founded Norsebox in November 2015 after moving back to the US from Sweden. Having always loved the modern aesthetic, but never knowing which brands to pursue, I created a subscription box that introduces Americans to Scandinavian designers with home accessories products.

I began by learning some basic photoshop and photography skills, sourcing products from designers in broken Swedish and packaging the boxes in my apartment. Eventually, I outsourced the design/photography and moved to a small warehouse space in Niles, IL for shipping.

Norsebox is, without a doubt, the leading subscription service for Scandinavian design. The brand has a loyal following and often gets free press (Fortune, Apartment Therapy) as mid-century modern and minimalist design take over.

Norsebox has solid partnerships with several large and small suppliers across Scandinavia, giving us access to the latest products in home decor.

Norsebox primarily uses Instagram, but also relies on Facebook and Pinterest to grow its customer base.

Included in the sale is the domain name, the Shopify online store, our customer accounts, email marketing lists, social media sites/accounts and digital marketing material. Physical inventory is also included in addition to the selling price.

I have loved creating this company more than anything and have learned so much through the process. I would love to share with someone who is passionate about making great design accessible.

Why should someone buy this store?

If you're passionate about design and would like a relatively low key startup, this is for you! First, Scandinavian design gets tons of attention with press. Norsebox has been successful with no marketing spend - we have been published in Fortune (full page!), Apartment Therapy, Buzzfeed, Midwest Home, Redbook.

Second, Norsebox is a relatively low maintenance business, making it a great starting point. The boxes send on a quarterly cadence, so there are only a few times a year that things get really busy. Four times a year efforts go toward sourcing product, coordinating logistics, packaging, and fielding customer inquiries. Other than that, the primary function is posting on social media, customer upkeep, marketing and the occasional blog post.

This business is turnkey, low maintenance and any effort will go a long way!

How can the future owner improve the business?

Norsebox has been successful with no marketing spend and very few email campaigns. A little love in the marketing department would go a long way! There is also opportunity to expand into own product line or pivot into a more frequent shipping cadence. Sky is the limit!

What work have you put into the store?

Where to begin! I began the concept a few years ago and tested on 30 customers with the first box. From there, I rebranded with a new logo, website, and gorgeous images of the box for marketing. I developed partnership with 20+ Scandinavian design brands and have carved out a straightforward shipping process. I also have worked closely with ReCharge to fine tune the recurring billing system.

Other details about profit: I would travel often to Chicago for shipping which ate up a lot of the profit! This could definitely increase to 10% margin with streamlined shipping.
