Why this business was started
Im a serial entrepreneur focusing on creative projects, OLY Clothing was the third business started from scratch. OLY started as a passion project to get more people into exercise and activity, to make an active lifestyle cool and to help motivate people to take control of their health. Consumers now love the brand, our message and products, especially within our local market space. We recently hit a record of 13k in sales in a single month and there seems to be real promise for this brand.
We also wanted to make cost effective, high quality clothing that could with stand the intense sport of Functional fitness & training in general.
The reason of selling this business
There are two primary reasons.
A career change in May 2021 see's me pursue a life long dream of combining my passions of Marketing and Physiology in a research project for drug adherence in elderly people. This is a lucrative and challenging post for me personally, so i feel its the right thing to do.
The career change means that if i want to run an e-commerce store it needs to be a more passive approach. I was tempted to turn OLY Clothing into a Drop ship store but could not work out cost effective fulfilment method with the services that where available.
What's involved in running this business
We generate traffic by using a combination of SEO, email marketing, paid advertising (Facebook + Instagram), organic social media (Facebook + Instagram), trade shows and events which are typically in the CrossFit space, Adroll and online retargetting. All simply managed by one person.
We convert traffic to sales by a combined effort or marketing, branding, good creative in ads on Facebook, good products that the market wants and good site functionality (ease of use).
We maintain customer relations mostly via email, generally the only time we're in contact with a customer is when theyve contacted us for an exchange / refund or update on their order. Email is also how we let them know if theres been an issue with their order. We never publicly announce 'slow delivery' or anythig that might damage the reputation or efficacy of the business. We generally only use Facebook and Instagram to relay mass market messages. Eg, 'We're closed on Christmas for XYZ dates.
We fulfil all orders in house. It takes one person to do all customer service and order fulfilment, but this can be easily changed with scale. We operate a 48 hours policy that a customer will wait no longer than 48hours from ordering before their order is dispatched. All easily done by one person.
Roughly 20% of our custom is repeat custom. We try to to retain as many customers as possible by staying in contact via regular emailing and automations set for 60 and 90 days post purchase. We have a high standard of service, receiving no lower than 5 star reviews for our service and product. We use organic and paid advertising on Facebook and Instagram so that we remain current, relevant and maintain engagement. We use online retargetting using Adroll and Meazy, two online retargetting apps.
All products we list are thoroughly tested before being brought to market. We charge premium price tags for some products and so feel it's necessary to adequately test the quality, fit, longevity and washability of all garments. Plus, the products are used in an intensive sport like functional fitness and so must be tested relative to the demands placed on the garments during training.
Typical day to day: - Every system is different but we use a 24 hours window for shipping and sending. At 4pm we print off all orders and gather the information relative to the orders (Delivery Labels, Handwritten slips and returns forms. Which will all be provided in the transition) - We currently drop the orders into a Royal mail office and send via their system. I can confirm we're currently integrating the Click + Drop system that Royal mail have in the name of bettering our margins and making customer service easier (delivery updates) - If there are custom apparel orders that need tended to the manager will prep, fold or bag and send the orders.
Monthly stock take is done via Stocky, its very simple and effective at keeping us up to date.
Marketing, done by the director is mostly done in bulk batches and scheduled. Typical marketing includes 2 posts per week on Instagram feed, 4 stories on Instagram, 1 email every week (apart from busy periods like Christmas + BFCM) is the primary marketing methods.
Facebook Ads are checked once per week and adjusted accordingly.

Its an app on our site. - Reviews for products are automated using [REDACTED] - SEO optimiser by Booster Apps - Bundle maker by Booster Apps (for upselling) - Abandoned cart emails are sent using privy email service. - Klaviyo Email systems - Stocky for stock control
Content curation: We have over 2000 high res, high quality images that we can provide. Over 45 promotional videos including campaign videos, series and podcasts. We have access to 3 great photographers who are great at curating both video and photo content, and whom we have worked with in the past. Thus they are comfortable and capable at shooting the brand.
Podcast. We have a podcast where we interview people who have found success in different fields. We have done 20 shows as part of season 1 and will be doing 8 deeper shows for season 2. There is no rush on the launch of our 2nd show.

SuppliersWe currently use white label manufacturing. This means we get supply from white label wholesalers and bring them to our customising teams. The team who do our print are based in Londonderry, N. Ireland (Image Branding). They recieve our garments, print it, add bespoke features, bag and tag the product ready for retail. Embroidery is done by CG Embroidery and follows the same process. Suppliers are all UK based: Pencarrie, Ralawise, Prestige Leisure Custom apparel printers are based in Portadown, N. How to grow this business
How i would grow the store: - Outsource fulfilment of orders and service. Apps like Zen Store could facilitate this. - Move production primarily to middle east or China, saving 20-30% on production cost. Or if you already have a line of supply you're already there! - Utilise our newly built email list - Inject more marketing budget to utilise our high ROAS on FB ads (9-16ROAS) - Attend tradeshows / CrossFit events (a months revenue in 1-3 days)
