Business Story

Why this business was started

I started in college back in 2014 as a creative outlet to make something meaningful for myself. I wanted to create a braille necklace to remember my late cousin. I started searching for materials and kept making more jewelry. I soon discovered that I could sell the pieces in boutiques and online and it grew from there.

The reason of selling this business

I decided I would like to move forward with another career at a nonprofit and pursue that. I want the business to be able to continue, but don't want to run it anymore.

What's involved in running this business

Fulfilling orders for website and etsy and small wholesale accounts, ordering parts, assembling jewelry, working with manufacturers and suppliers, ordering packaging and shipping materials, running social media and marketing, creating new lines, attending trunk shows and potentially trade shows, reaching out to stores for new wholesale accounts, customer service including emails and messages on social media, and photography.

This business was founded: over 1 year ago
Time to run this business: approximately 20 hours per week

Other details about profit: Total income in 2019 was $57,504.74 and profit was $7,474.65 13% profit margin Total income for 2018 was $48,981.68 and profit was $15,596.51 32% profit margin For the average profit per month and margin I calculated the average using 2018 and 2019. The reason for the profit decrease in 2019 was that I decided to test out spending money on having someone run facebook ads. It was very expensive and ended up increasing sales some, but decreasing profit more so I stopped. I switched over from using Squarespace to Shopify at the end of November of 2018 and had a new website designed. I also have an etsy shop.

    Seller‘s Advice

    How to grow this business

To grow the store over the next five years, I would start to attend trade shows, reach out to more boutiques and or larger department stores. I would hire someone to do the marketing and create an influencer marketing plan. I'd outsource the making of the jewelry if you aren't interested in that part. There is a lot of room to grow.

    Skills to have

The new owner should have experience in online retail and fashion jewelry. If you don't want to make the jewelry pieces yourself, you could outsource using the contacts I have.
