Why this business was started

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and have found that creating projects from scratch fulfilled me more than anything. Additionally, for a while I've been concerned with the rate at which we're depleting our environmental resources. I worked in the corporate world for about a year after graduating from UC Santa Barbara, and I was not enjoying my day to day life. I decided to take a leap of faith and dive head first into the e-commerce industry in order to gain experience, establish myself financially, and also make a positive impact on the environment. After months of research, brainstorming, product development, late nights, work and investment, I launched Rescü in 2019.

The reason of selling this business

Rescü was completely bootstrapped using my Bar-Mitzvah savings. I took every last dollar out of my savings account and decided to take the risk of starting my own company. I didn't take on investment as I wanted to be responsible for the entirety of the business. Unfortunately, reaching the breakeven point and eventually becoming profitable proved to be far more costly than my savings could handle. Additionally, I am getting married this August, so I am now in a position where I am forced to generate a stable, monthly income to support my family. I feel as though I was barely getting started and digging my teeth into the business, but time, money and life circumstances caught up to me. The brand I've developed and the progress I've made with Rescü make this an attractive and accessible opportunity for someone to own their own brand or add to their existing portfolio.

What's involved in running this business

A big part of running Rescü involves digital marketing. Whether that be taken care of by you, an in-house consultant, or a hired team, the bulk of the work is in making the advertising spend profitable. There are peripheral tasks that are very important as well, including managing social media accounts, working on email marketing, customer service and fulfilling orders etc. All of these things can be outsourced, but they will come with a cost.

Other details about profit: Since the beginning of 2020, we have not driven traffic to the Shopify store because we had to stop spending on advertising. We have received about 2 orders per month organically. We are selling on Amazon as well, and have sales of ~$2k so far in 2020 without spending anything on advertising. When we are spending on Amazon advertising, we were generating ~$4k per month at a breakeven rate. Since then we've received more reviews, 95% of which are 5 stars.

We have established reasonable MOQ's given that we're in the early stages of the business still, so working with them has been seamless. The production run they provided was with magnificent quality, we have had no issues at all. Additionally, we can introduce you to the company who oversaw the production and quality control before our inventory shipped. They did a fantastic job and ensured that the product we received was in optimal state and exactly as had been instructed.

    How to grow this business

    Growth Opportunities: -Continue generating data on Facebook Pixel and season it until it becomes profitable. -Attack wholesale opportunities. -Revamp ad spend as well as review growth on Amazon. The more reviews, the more organic revenue. -Introduce new products that will generate recurring revenue on the site (branded, recycled poop bags for example). -Dedicate time and effort to generating PR. We didn't do much of that as ROI is difficult to track and we had limited budget.

    Skills to have

    Any knowledge regarding Digital Advertising, running an e-commerce website, contacts in the pet industry, fulfillment experience, or any experience on Amazon will be a huge advantage and will make for a quick transition. None of those are required to be successful, but they may help.
