Business Story

Why this business was started

Retro Gaming was a hobby that quickly turned into a business. It's highly enjoyable interacting with the retro gaming community and assisting with their collecting, repairs and passion. The business started with Global Garage and the supply of high quality replacement power supplies for consoles, then grew into Retro Sales as a platform to sell more items and provide a hub for the community.

The reason of selling this business

I recently had a baby, so my time has become limited and I am considering selling to free up some time but also use the proceeds to invest into other ideas that are fully automated. I will keep running Retro Sales myself until a buyer comes along as it doesn't take up too much time on a day to day basis, however in the long term I would like to direct my energy into some new ventures.

What's involved in running this business

Daily operations are very simply: Watch the inventory and order from suppliers as necessary. Respond to emails, trade in inquiries and buying opportunities, process orders and ship items.

99% of all stock now comes via trade ins. There's no shortage of people contacting the store with loads of retro items for sale. We typically buy large bulk lots of games and consoles to replenish inventory. There's always some "game hunting" via the usual channels but that method of purchasing is very limited.

The store is also now selling more brand new stock than ever before, so the reliance on "used" items is diminishing. The sales growth this year has been mainly due to offing products to the market that no other vendor is offering. Retro Sales has a unique offering which is easily transferred to the new owner.

General description

Retro Sales / Global Garage is an Australian retro video game store specialising in used games, consoles and accessories for retro gamers.

We have the physical inventory and focus on the huge Australian market with attractive prices in Australian dollars. Our customers keep coming back as we are often priced under our competitors. Being local with local inventory means we have lightning fast shipping (2 days on average) with local warranties for piece of mind for our customers. Our ever expanding worldwide customers can enjoy shipping rates via Australia post. All shipping rates are automatically calculated with our integrated Australia post price feed on the back-end.

Our suppliers are based all over the world, but with some throughout Australia. The full list of suppliers and product details will be shared with the buyer and explained where necessary.

We brand our self with the motto "Pay less, play more" which is what we really try to achieve with every customer and relationship. There's no point charging the earth for a product if the custom doesn't feel like they received a fair deal as they they will never return. Our pricing model guarantees the customer walks away with a pleasant and friendly transaction. That experience typically results in them discussing Retro Sales with friends and business grows from there. Our customers are happy and regularly return as their preferred retro gaming marketplace.

We source or inventory from local and overseas supplier and generally buy in larger quantities to keep the expenses on our end low. We can then pass on the savings to our customers.

Technology: Retro Sales is built on Shopify with a customised graphical front end. The back end remains standard, but with enhancements enabled such as alternative payment gateway integration, worldwide postage prices, backup and restore, SEO and marketing strategies such as social proof.

We've invested heavily in SEO and organic Google rankings so we no longer need to spend a cent on advertising. All of our traffic is organic and has a wide reach all over the net for a vast array of retro gaming keywords. We continue to grow on a daily basis and only minor maintenance is required to keep the store running at it's peak. Rest assured there is no hidden costs behind our success such as expensive Adwords campaigns or other paid promotion.

Day to Day: Daily operations are very simply: Watch the inventory and order from suppliers as necessary. Respond to emails, trade in inquiries and buying opportunities, process orders and ship items.

Why should someone buy this store?

The Retro Sales store is a turn key solution, meaning all the hard work of setting up a retro gaming store has been done. There's a lot of work that goes into making this happen before you can sell a single game. Branding, domains, website, advertising, SEO, inventory, suppliers, etc. https://www.retrosales.com.au

The Amazon store is fully automated. Inventory is sent in and they manage everything from there. https://www.amazon.com.au/s?rh=n%3A4851799051%2Cp_4%3AGlobal+Garage

The eBay store simply needs sales to be processed as they occur. https://www.ebay.com.au/sh/mystore

Think about building your own website for a second. No one knows it's there, no one visits, no one trusts you, you have no inventory, etc.

How can the future owner improve the business?

The vision for Retro Sales is to move into a classified model where members are encouraged to list their items directly for sale on the site with little to no fees. This is in contrast to the existing marketplaces like eBay where exorbitant fees are charged on all sales. We strongly believe this approach coupled with the existing brand name of Retro Sales will see huge potential growth and dominance in the retro gaming marketplace.

The retro space in general is growing worldwide and we're seeing development from companies like krikzz.com, 8bitdo.com, retrogamingcables.co.uk, limitedrungames.com and analogue.co

The logical expansion is to partner with this companies
